Cold floors are almost always a message from below: an uninsulated basement, an open crawlspace, a leaky rim joist, or a room over an unheated garage. The floor is cold because the space under it is - so the fix is downstairs, not a rug.
Trace the cold to its source
- Main-floor cold over a basement: an under-insulated or leaky basement and rim joist pulls heat down; closed-cell on the walls and rim fixes it.
- Floor over a crawlspace: an open, vented crawlspace is a cold void under the floor - encapsulate it with foam.
- Room over a garage / bonus room: the floor sits over unheated space - foam the floor system.
Why foam is the fix
