Two foams, matched to the job
There is no single "best" spray foam - there's the right one for the assembly:
- Closed-cell (R-6 to R-7 per inch) is dense, structural, and becomes a vapour barrier at about two inches. It's the Alberta workhorse for basements, crawlspaces, exterior walls, metal buildings and anything below grade or exposed to moisture.
- Open-cell (R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch) is lighter, softer, and vapour-permeable - a cost-effective choice for interior walls, sound control and budget attic work.
Most homes end up with a mix. Part of a good quote is a contractor telling you where each foam belongs, not selling you the expensive one everywhere.
Priced by the board foot - and honest about it
Spray foam is quoted per board foot (one square foot at one inch thick), so the real drivers are area, target R-value, foam type and access. Closed-cell medium-density foam is governed by CAN/ULC-S705.1 (material) and S705.2 (installation), and a properly certified installer works inside CUFCA's quality-assurance program. In occupied space, foam is finished with a code-required thermal barrier. Doing it to spec is the difference between insulation that performs for decades and a callback.
