There is no single "best" spray foam - there's the right one for the assembly, which is why the comparison above splits them rather than quoting one number for "spray foam". In Alberta you will be quoted one of two density grades: 2 lb closed cell or half pound open cell. Closed-cell is the Alberta workhorse for basements, crawlspaces, exterior walls, metal buildings and anything below grade or exposed to moisture; open-cell is the cost-effective choice for interior walls, sound control and budget attic work.

What does spray foam insulation cost in Alberta? It is priced by the board foot - one square foot covered to one inch thick - so a 1,000 square foot attic at six inches is 6,000 board feet, not 1,000 of anything. The drivers are area, which foam the assembly needs, the thickness your target R-value takes, and access. Anyone giving you a firm number before seeing the building is guessing. Closed cell or open cell - which one do I need? Closed-cell wherever the assembly meets weather, ground or steel: basements, crawl spaces, rim joists, metal buildings, exterior walls and roofs. It runs about R-6 to R-7 per inch and becomes a vapour barrier at roughly two inches. Open-cell is lighter, cheaper per board foot and suits interior walls and sound separation. Why is spray foam worth more than batt or blown-in? Because it insulates and air-seals in the same pass. Batt slows heat and does nothing about air movement, which is why a wall can be completely full of insulation and still leak. In an Alberta winter the leaks you close are the bills you stop paying.
