Clairmont is a hamlet in the County of Grande Prairie No. 1, sitting on Highway 2 between the city to the south and Sexsmith to the north, and it carries the County's administration office. That position explains almost everything about the buildings here. There is very little old townsite stock to retrofit. What there is instead is recent housing on one side of the highway and large serviced industrial lots on the other, and the two produce completely different work.

Two populations of building, one hamlet

The residential side is new or near-new: subdivision houses and country-residential acreages put up within living memory, framed conventionally, insulated to whatever the code of the day asked for. The industrial side is steel-clad shops, service yards and transport buildings with highway frontage, serving oil and gas service work, trucking, forestry haul and farm equipment. When somebody here asks about spray foam, the first thing worth establishing is which of those two they are standing in, because the diagnosis is not the same.

The shell-first habit

On the industrial side a building commonly goes up as a bare shell to get equipment under a roof before freeze-up, with the insulation left as a later phase. Sometimes that phase arrives years afterwards, which means we are frequently spraying a building that is in service: floor poured, mezzanine framed, racking loaded, benches against the walls. That is a materially different job from spraying open framing, and it is the normal case here rather than the exception. Access, masking and the sequence of what gets moved are a real part of the scope.

A long cold season without the thaw cycles

This is the Peace Country at a northern latitude, and the winter behaves differently from the south. There is no regular run of chinooks pushing the temperature back above freezing every few weeks. It gets cold and it stays cold, so the temperature difference across a wall is sustained for months rather than swinging. Sustained difference rewards air sealing far more than it rewards depth, because an air leak runs continuously for the whole season while a thermal weakness only costs what the gradient costs.

Why the building season shapes the quote

Earthworks and foundation work stop at freeze-up, which compresses everything outdoor into a short window and pushes interior work into winter. Foam is applied to a substrate that has to be above its minimum temperature and clear of frost, so a winter interior job usually needs the building temporarily heated and the steel or concrete brought up before anything is sprayed. That heat is part of the work, not an inconvenience around it, and a quote that does not mention it has not thought about when the job will actually happen.

Open cell or closed cell

Closed cell runs about R-6 to R-7 per inch and becomes a vapour barrier at roughly two inches, which is what puts it against concrete, against steel and anywhere below grade. Open cell is about R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch, stays permeable, and suits interior partitions, sound work and deep cavities where there is room. Most Clairmont jobs use both, in different places, for different reasons.

Spray Foam Insulation Clairmont: Common Questions

Our house is new. Is there anything to do? Usually sealing rather than adding. New houses here carry the specified depth and leak at the same places every house leaks: top plates, the attic hatch, penetrations and the rim joist.

The shop went up years ago and was never insulated. Can it still be done? Yes, and that is most of what we do on the industrial side. The building being in use changes the preparation and the sequence, not the feasibility.

Can foam be sprayed in the middle of winter? Inside a building, yes, provided the surfaces are warm and dry enough. Temporary heat is often needed and should be in the plan from the start.

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Clairmont? It is priced per board foot of sprayed area, so the number follows surface area and target R-value. On a building already in service, access and the time spent moving and masking around what is inside can matter as much as the area itself.

Who does spray foam insulation in Clairmont? We do. We quote the job from the building, schedule it and stand behind it, rather than describing someone else's work.
