Why such a small area matters so much

The rim joist is where the wood frame lands on the concrete. That junction runs around the entire perimeter of the house, and it stacks up several difficult conditions in one place: a wood-to-concrete joint, the ends of every floor joist, the sill plate, and often the point where services enter the building.
