How to use the spray foam board foot calculator
- Enter the area to be sprayed (square feet).
- Enter the target thickness in inches - or pick a target R-value and let it convert (attic R-38 is about 6 inches of closed-cell or 11 inches of open-cell).
- Get an estimated board-foot quantity you can take into any conversation with an installer.
What it is - and is not
The result is an estimate for planning, not a quote. Real price depends on foam type, access, prep and your specific building, which only a site visit confirms. We never turn a calculator output into a price.
Spray Foam Calculator: Common Questions
What does the calculator actually give me? An estimated board-foot quantity for the area and thickness you enter. That is the unit installers price in, so it is the number that lets you read a quote instead of guessing at one. It is a planning estimate, never a price.
How do I know what thickness to enter? Work back from the R-value you are targeting. Attic R-38 is about six inches of closed-cell or eleven inches of open-cell, and the calculator will convert a target R-value for you. If you are unsure which foam the assembly needs, that is a site-visit question rather than a calculator one.
Why does the same area give two very different numbers? Because the foams differ by nearly double on R-value per inch. Reaching one R-value with open-cell takes far more inches - and therefore far more board feet - than reaching it with closed-cell. That difference is the whole reason to check both before comparing quotes.
Is the estimate the price? No, and the two are deliberately never blurred here. The estimate helps you budget; only a quote is a price. Real cost depends on foam type, access, prep and the specific building, and none of that is visible to a calculator.
Can I take this number to an installer? That is exactly what it is for. Walking into the conversation already thinking in board feet means the estimate stops being mysterious and you can ask why a number is what it is.
What if my space is an awkward shape? Estimate it in sections and add them up - the calculator works on area, so several rectangles totalled is closer to the truth than one guess at an irregular room. Anything genuinely complicated is worth leaving to the site visit.
