Moisture is the farm problem
Almost every agricultural insulation enquiry we take starts as a heat question and turns out to be a moisture question.
Bare steel goes below the dew point of the air inside the building. Livestock respiration, wet bedding, a machine that came in warm, grain giving off moisture, a wash bay - all of it becomes water on the underside of the roof, and it falls on whatever is below.
The damage shows up as rust on equipment, mould in stored feed, wet bedding and corroded fasteners. It is a building-envelope failure that reads like a leaking roof.
Closed-cell foam bonded to the inside of the shell removes the cold surface and controls the vapour drive in one pass, which is why it is the default specification on Alberta farms.
Why post-frame and steel need foam specifically
Farm buildings are built for span and cost, not for insulating. Post-frame construction gives you horizontal girts across the posts and no real cavity. Steel arch buildings give you a curve with no flat surface at all.
Both defeat batt and board. Batt needs parallel-sided cavities; board needs flat surfaces and fasteners. Foam is applied to the inside face and runs continuously across framing rather than stopping at every girt - which is what closes the thermal-bridging gap that makes a batted farm building underperform its nominal R.

Closed-cell leads on the farm
Most agricultural buildings point to closed-cell for the same three reasons: it stops condensation on steel, it adds structural rigidity to a post-frame or arch building, and it delivers high R in the shallow depth available.
Open-cell has a limited role on the farm - it absorbs moisture, which is the opposite of what a high-humidity building needs. Where it does earn a place is interior partitions and sound.
Scheduling around the season
Farm buildings have to be empty for spraying and stay empty through the re-entry period, which makes the seasonal window the real constraint rather than the crew's calendar.
The practical advice is to book early. Between-season windows are short and every producer in the district wants the same weeks.
Agricultural Spray Foam Insulation Alberta: Common Questions
Can you spray over the existing blanket insulation? No. Vinyl-faced fibreglass has to come out - foam will not bond to it, and where it is damp you would seal that moisture in. Strip-out is a real line item and it is the one most often missing from a cheap quote.
Does the building have to be heated for insulation to be worth it? No. A large share of Alberta farm insulation goes into buildings that are never heated, purely to stop the condensation that costs equipment. That is a lower-spec job at a lower price.
Do I need a vapour barrier over the foam? Closed-cell at agricultural thicknesses is its own vapour retarder, and adding poly over it can trap moisture between two impermeable layers. We confirm the assembly for your building.
