Why the girts are the problem

In a stick-framed wall, insulation sits between studs in a defined cavity. In a post-frame wall the girts run horizontally across the face of the posts and the steel screws directly to them. There is no clean cavity, and every girt is a continuous path from the warm side to the cold side.

Batt insulation between girts leaves the girts themselves uninsulated. At Alberta design temperatures those lines show up on a thermal camera as clear stripes across the wall, and in real life as condensation lines and frost patterns on the interior.

Spray foam applied to the inside face runs across the girts rather than stopping at them, which is what makes the assembly perform.

Open-cell or closed-cell in a pole barn

This is the decision that changes the price most, and the honest answer depends on the building.

  • Closed-cell is the default for anything with a steel skin, any livestock use, and any building you intend to heat. It controls vapour, adds rigidity to the frame, and delivers the most R in the least depth.
  • Open-cell can make sense on an interior partition or a ceiling in a dry, well-detailed building where a separate vapour retarder is being installed anyway. It is cheaper per board foot and better at sound.

The three places a pole barn leaks

  1. The base. Where the steel meets the grade or the concrete curb. It is out of sight, it is continuous around the whole building, and it is rarely sealed properly.
  2. The eave. The gap between the top of the wall and the roof line, often left open for ventilation and then never detailed.
  3. The doors. Large sliding and overhead doors move, and moving assemblies leak. Sealing the perimeter is worth more than adding an inch of foam everywhere else.

A good scope addresses all three. A cheap quote covers the flat wall area and none of them.

Can you foam a pole barn without removing the interior liner? No. Foam must bond to the substrate it is insulating. If there is steel or plywood liner on the inside it comes off, or the foam goes on the inside face of the liner - which changes where the dew point sits and needs to be designed, not assumed.

How thick for a heated pole barn in Alberta? Commonly three to four inches of closed-cell in the walls and four to six in the roof, depending on how warm you intend to hold it and what the building is used for. The number comes out of the site visit.

Does foam affect a post-frame building warranty? Building warranties vary and this is worth checking with your building supplier before work starts. What we can tell you is that closed-cell bonded to the inside of the frame is a common and well-understood assembly in Alberta post-frame construction.

Will it help with the noise from rain and hail on the steel? Substantially, yes. Foam damps the panel it is bonded to. Open-cell does more for sound than closed-cell, but any continuous foam layer is a large improvement over bare steel.
