Pole barn spray foam insulation in Redcliff deals with the cheapest fast building anyone puts up out here. Post-frame construction is what goes on an acreage or the back of a growing property when storage is needed in a hurry: posts set in the ground, horizontal girts across them, steel screwed to the outside, and nothing else. It is an excellent way to get a roof over something and a poor starting point for an insulated building, which is why so many of them get retrofitted a few years later.

The geometry is the problem, not the material

A stud wall gives you a flat plane of framing with cavities between. A post-frame wall gives you widely spaced posts with girts running across them, so the framing is in two directions at once and the steel is fastened to the outside of the girts. There is no flat cavity. There is a grid of boxes at varying depths, and whatever goes into them has to be shaped to each one or it does not fill.

That is why cut-to-size insulation performs so poorly in these buildings. Every box needs a piece, every piece needs friction or support to hold it, and in a building nobody finishes on the inside there is nothing to hold it at all. Foam is applied rather than fitted, so the girt grid stops being an obstacle, and because it bonds to the back of the steel it needs no support system.

Spray the roof, or spray the ceiling, but decide

A post-frame building usually has no ceiling, just trusses and the underside of the roof steel. Two options, and they are different jobs. Closed-cell on the underside of the roof steel brings the whole volume inside the envelope, which is what you want if the building is tall and the whole space is used. Insulating at the bottom chord of the truss makes a flat ceiling plane and leaves the roof space outside, which heats a smaller volume and is cheaper to run if the upper space is dead.

The thing to avoid is doing both partially. A building with a bit of insulation at the ceiling and a bit under the roof has created a cold pocket in between, and that pocket is where the condensation goes.

Posts in the ground and the band at grade

The bottom of a post-frame wall is the weakest part. There is often a skirt board, some backfill, and a gap where the steel stops short of grade. Air comes in along that whole line, and because posts are set in the soil the lower portion of the wall is in contact with ground temperature. Sealing that band is a small item with a large effect, and it is also the place to use closed-cell specifically because it is unaffected by moisture.

Dust and the inside surface

These buildings are dusty, and the dust here is soil, growing media and packaging fibre. That matters twice: substrates have to be cleaned for the foam to bond, and once the foam is on, a closed continuous surface gives dust nothing to lodge in and nothing to shed onto what is stored below.

Pole Barn Spray Foam Insulation Redcliff: Common Questions

Why did the batt insulation fall out of our pole barn? Because a post-frame wall has no flat cavity and nothing to hold material in place. The girt grid is not a stud wall and it does not behave like one.

Roof steel or ceiling? Decide on how much of the height you actually use. The roof deck brings the whole volume inside; the bottom chord makes a smaller space to heat.

Can you spray straight onto the back of the steel? Yes, provided it is clean and dry. The foam bonds to it, which also removes the condensing surface that currently drips on everything.

How much does pole barn spray foam insulation cost in Redcliff? Priced per board foot of sprayed area, so the choice between roof deck and ceiling plane changes the area substantially before depth is even discussed. The band at grade is a small separate item worth having in the scope.

How do I choose a pole barn spray foam contractor in Redcliff? Ask whether they are insulating at the roof or at the ceiling, and make sure the answer is one of them rather than some of each.
