Why the far north changes the arithmetic

Heat loss is cumulative. It is not driven by how cold the worst night gets, but by how many hours the inside and outside are at different temperatures, and by how large that difference is.

This far north, both numbers are larger than anywhere in southern Alberta. A leak that costs a modest amount per week in Lethbridge costs meaningfully more here, and it does so for more weeks of the year.

That shortens the payback period on the same job. Work that might take many years to justify in a milder part of the province justifies itself considerably faster here, which is why sealing is usually the first recommendation rather than an upsell.

The river valley

Peace River sits in a deep valley, and that has a real effect on winter conditions. Cold air is heavier and drains downhill, pooling on the valley floor on still nights and lingering after a cold snap has broken elsewhere.

Buildings low in the valley can therefore run colder for longer than the surrounding country, while enjoying somewhat more shelter from wind. Heat loss here leans on conduction and the stack effect rather than wind pressure - which puts the attic and the basement at the top of the list rather than the walls.
