Claresholm sits below the Porcupine Hills on the western edge of the prairie, in one of the windiest inhabited corridors in Canada. Around 72% of dwellings here were built before 1991.
Old buildings plus relentless wind is the combination that makes air sealing matter more here than almost anywhere.
Why wind changes the answer
Insulation is rated by R-value, measured in still air. Wind does not read the label.
When wind hits a building it raises the air pressure on the windward side and lowers it on the leeward side. That pressure difference drives air straight through any unsealed path in the envelope - around window frames, through the rim joist, past the attic hatch, through every penetration for wiring and plumbing. Cold air comes in one side; heated air is pulled out the other.
Insulation slows heat moving through a material. It does nothing about air moving around it.
In the chinook belt the effect is worse because the wind is not just strong, it is persistent and it swings temperature fast. A building that leaks is chasing the outside temperature all winter.
This is the honest case for spray foam in Claresholm: it seals and insulates in one pass, so the air path and the thermal path get dealt with together.
Where wind gets in
- Rim joist and sill plate - the junction between foundation and framing, and the most common uncontrolled leak in an older house.
- Attic penetrations and the hatch - where warm air escapes, which is what pulls cold air in lower down.
- Window and door surrounds - the gap behind the trim, often stuffed loosely with batt that wind moves straight through.
- Additions and enclosed porches - usually the coldest rooms, usually the leakiest junctions.
Ranch and agricultural buildings
Ranching country means shops, equipment storage, calving barns and steel outbuildings.
Two different problems show up. In heated shops it is condensation on the underside of the steel deck - warm moist air reaching cold metal, condensing, then dripping. In livestock buildings it is worse, because animals themselves add a great deal of moisture to the air.

Wind loading is also a real consideration on outbuildings here. Closed-cell foam adds stiffness to the assembly it bonds to - a secondary benefit, not the reason to buy it, but worth knowing.
What we will not tell you
We will not quote a price per square foot without someone seeing the building. Access and preparation drive cost as much as area does, and an old farm building is rarely a clean rectangle.
We will not tell you foam is right for every surface. For an open, accessible attic with plenty of headroom, sealing the penetrations and blowing in something cheaper is often the better value - and we will say so.
