Spray foam insulation in Didsbury

Didsbury sits on the corridor between Calgary and Red Deer, and a good share of the housing around it is acreage and country residential rather than town lots. About 57% of dwellings here were built before 1991, one of the lower pre-1991 shares among the smaller central Alberta towns.

The acreage economics

If your property is outside town, the numbers behind an insulation decision are different from a serviced lot in the city, and usually more favourable.

Heating often costs more per unit. Properties without natural gas service run on propane, electric or wood. The same air leak that costs a certain amount on gas costs more here, which shortens the payback on sealing it.

There is usually more than one building. A house, a garage, a shop. Doing them on one visit is materially cheaper per square foot than separate bookings, because mobilising the rig is a real cost.

Exposure is greater. Without the shelter of neighbouring buildings, a country house takes wind directly on every elevation.

If you are weighing whether it is worth it, the honest comparison is not the quote against zero - it is the quote against what you will spend heating a leaky building for the next twenty winters. Is spray foam worth it works through that without overselling it.

Country houses and additions

Rural houses grow. A place built in the 1970s acquires a porch, then a bigger kitchen, then a garage that gets attached. Each addition met whatever standard applied at the time, and the junctions between them are where air moves.

Those junctions are the specific thing foam handles well, because it fills irregular gaps that no batt can be cut to fit. If you have a room that has never been comfortable, it is very often on the far side of one of these joints.

Shops and garages

The most common enquiry from an acreage is the shop.

A heated shop also needs the thermal barrier question answered properly - what has to cover the foam, and where. Get that clear in the quote rather than after the fact.

Newer houses

With close to half the local stock built after 1991, plenty of enquiries here are about newer homes. A newer house can still leak, and the usual suspects are the bonus room over the garage, the attic hatch, and a rim joist that was insulated but never sealed.
