Spray foam insulation in Redcliff

Redcliff sits just north-west of Medicine Hat in one of the sunniest, driest corners of Canada, and it has a long-standing greenhouse and industrial character that shapes the work we get asked about. Around 62% of dwellings here were built before 1991.

A different climate argument

Most of Alberta sells insulation on winter. Redcliff genuinely has two seasons worth talking about.

The winters are cold and the wind across this part of the southeast is persistent. But the summers are also hot and intensely sunny, and that matters for any building with a large roof area. An uninsulated or poorly sealed roof deck radiates heat down into the space below all afternoon, and for a workshop, a warehouse or anything with equipment running inside, that turns into a real cooling and working-conditions problem.

Foam addresses both directions. The same continuous layer that keeps heat in through January slows heat coming in through July. If you are insulating a shop here, it is worth valuing the summer benefit rather than treating it as a bonus.

Industrial and commercial buildings

Redcliff's industrial base means a lot of steel: workshops, fabrication space, warehousing and storage.

For heated steel buildings the recurring failure is condensation on the underside of the deck. Warm, moist interior air reaches cold metal, condenses, and drips onto whatever is below. It reads as a leak and gets chased as one, sometimes for years.

Buildings with high internal humidity - anything where water is used in the process, or where growing operations sit nearby - carry a much heavier moisture load than a normal workshop. That is worth stating up front when you enquire, because it changes the specification rather than just the quantity.

Cold storage and controlled environments

Any space held at a deliberately different temperature from outside - cold storage, controlled rooms, temperature-sensitive stock - depends far more on the continuity of the envelope than on the headline R-value. Houses

For a pre-1991 Redcliff house the priorities are ordinary and effective: seal the attic penetrations before adding depth, address the rim joist, and deal with the basement or crawlspace if the floors run cold.
