Drumheller sits in a river valley cut well below the surrounding prairie, and that geography changes how buildings here behave in winter.

Valley bottoms hold cold
On calm winter nights, cold air is heavier and drains downhill. In a valley like the Red Deer River's, it pools at the bottom and sits there. The result is that low-lying parts of town can run colder than the prairie above them, and stay that way longer after a cold snap breaks.
For a building, sustained cold matters more than a brief extreme. A house loses heat continuously, in proportion to how long the temperature difference lasts. Long, still, cold stretches are exactly the conditions where an unsealed building leaks the most and where an air seal earns its cost.
The valley also shelters much of the town from the wind that hammers the open prairie, which is a genuine advantage - but it means heat loss here is driven more by conduction and stack effect than by wind pressure. Warm air rises, escapes through the attic, and pulls cold air in low to replace it.
That makes the attic and the basement the two ends of the same problem.
Where to start
- Attic air sealing before insulation depth. Sealing the penetrations first, then insulating, beats simply piling more material on top of a leaky ceiling. See stopping attic heat loss.
- The rim joist and basement header - the low end of the stack effect, and usually the cheapest meaningful win in an older Drumheller house.
- Crawlspaces - common in older valley construction, and often the reason floors are cold no matter how high the furnace runs.
Older housing, mixed eras
Drumheller's building stock spans a long history, from early coal-era housing through post-war and later development. Assemblies differ significantly between them, and so does the right approach. An installer who looks at what is actually in the wall - rather than quoting a standard package - is the one worth having.
