The moisture load is constant

A pen of cattle, a barn full of horses or a milking parlour puts a steady volume of water vapour into the air through respiration, bedding and washdown. In summer it ventilates away. In February, when the building is closed up, it condenses on the roof deck and the walls.

Left alone, that produces the familiar list: frost on the underside of the roof, drip lines down the walls, wet bedding, rusting hardware, and a persistent respiratory challenge for the animals housed there.

What foam changes

Closed-cell sprayed to the roof deck and walls does two jobs in one pass. It raises the interior surface temperature above the dew point so condensation stops forming, and it provides the R-value that lets a modest heat source hold the building at a workable temperature.

For most Alberta barns the second benefit is what gets budgeted and the first is what actually gets noticed.

Ventilation still matters

This is where honest advice separates from a sales pitch. Sealing a livestock building tightly without addressing ventilation moves the problem rather than solving it. Air that was leaking out through the envelope was also carrying moisture and ammonia out with it.

A properly insulated barn needs controlled ventilation - mechanical or well-designed passive - sized for the animal load. Any installer who tells you foam alone fixes barn air quality is selling you half a system. Plan the two together.

Different barns, different scopes

• Livestock housing. Closed-cell throughout, with attention to the wall-to-floor junction where washdown water sits.
• Horse barns. Same envelope logic, plus a hard look at anything an animal can reach. Foam must be covered or protected where it is within reach of chewing.

Does spray foam need to be covered in a barn? Where animals can reach it, yes - foam is not a wearing surface and will be chewed or rubbed. Fire-protection requirements also apply to exposed foam in many occupancies, and we confirm what the building code requires for your building and use.

Will it stop the frost on the underside of the roof? That is exactly what it is for. Frost on the deck means the deck is below the dew point of the barn air. Closed-cell on the underside of the deck removes that condition.

Can it be applied with animals in the building? No. The barn needs to be emptied for application and for the re-entry period afterwards. Schedule it accordingly - most Alberta producers book it for a turnaround window.

Is open-cell ever right in a barn? Rarely. Open-cell absorbs and holds moisture, which is the opposite of what a high-humidity building needs. Closed-cell is the correct product here in nearly every case.
