Barn spray foam insulation in Claresholm is work on the cattle and horse buildings that sit west of town where the grain ground gives way to the Porcupine Hills. Most of them are tall buildings with a storage loft over the working floor, and that shape decides almost everything about how the job gets scoped.

The mow above the stalls is not a dead space

A traditional barn here has animals on the ground floor and hay, straw or nothing at all in the loft above. The owner thinks of the loft floor as the ceiling of the barn. The building does not. Heat and moisture from the animals rise straight through the plank floor into the mow, and the mow is vented to outside through the gable openings and the big loft door, so the air that carries that moisture is at outdoor temperature by the time it hits the underside of the roof deck.

That is why these barns frost on the inside of the roof sheathing and then rain on the hay during a thaw. The ceiling plane the owner is relying on has gaps between every board.

Deciding where the air barrier actually goes is the first conversation. If the mow is still used for hay, the loft floor is the plane to seal and insulate, and the roof is left cold and vented. If the mow is empty and will stay empty, it is usually cheaper and more effective to seal the roof deck and bring the whole volume inside.

Thermal mass lags the chinook

A barn of this kind carries real weight — plank floors, concrete feed alleys, often a stone or early concrete foundation and a stabled pack that holds moisture. When a chinook lifts the outdoor temperature twenty-five degrees in an afternoon, all of that mass is still at the temperature it reached overnight.

Warm, relatively humid air now moves into a building full of cold surfaces, and water appears on the floor, on the metal gates and on the underside of the deck. Owners describe it as the barn sweating on a warm day, which sounds backwards and is not. It is condensation driven by surface temperature, and the more the shell lags the air, the worse it gets.

An adhered, continuous insulation layer is what shortens that lag. Closed-cell foam at depth becomes its own vapour barrier at roughly two inches, so it both raises the interior surface temperature and keeps moist air out of the assembly behind it.

Rough timber is where foam has the advantage

Nothing in an old barn is sixteen inches on centre, square, or the same depth twice. Members are sawn rather than dimensioned, there are braces and knees crossing every bay, and the sheathing behind them is boards with gaps. Anything cut to size has to be fitted around all of that and still leaves a path at every edge. Sprayed foam takes the shape of what is there and bonds to it, which on this framing is the difference between an insulated barn and an insulated-looking one.

Scope it to a room, not a building

Very few of these barns want to be heated end to end, and we will say so. A calving pen, a tack and medicine room, or the section where water lines run are each a sensible, bounded job. The rest of the barn can stay a cold building that keeps weather off animals, which is what it was built to do.

Barn Spray Foam Insulation Claresholm: Common Questions

Why does the barn sweat when the weather warms up? Because the structure is still cold. A chinook brings warmer, moister air against surfaces that have not caught up, and the water comes out on the floor and the steelwork.

Should we insulate the loft floor or the roof? It depends whether the loft still holds hay. If it does, seal the floor and leave the roof cold and vented. If it is empty for good, the roof deck is usually the better plane.

Is it dry enough here that condensation is not an issue? No. In a barn the moisture is produced inside by the animals and the bedding, so outdoor humidity is not what governs it.

How much does barn spray foam insulation cost in Claresholm? Priced per board foot of sprayed surface, so scope drives it. Doing one pen or one room is a fraction of doing the whole shell, and on most of these barns it is the better job.

How do I choose a barn spray foam contractor in Claresholm? Ask them which plane they would seal and why. If they cannot tell you whether the loft floor or the roof is the air barrier, they have not looked at the building.
