Cold storage spray foam insulation in Claresholm is nearly always a room built inside a larger building rather than a purpose-built cooler. Between the farm yards west of town and the big clear-span structures left behind by the airfield, there is a lot of cheap floor area here and very little of it is conditioned — so people put a box inside the box.

The space around the cold room decides how it performs

A freestanding cooler has outdoor air on all six surfaces. A cold room inside an unheated shell has something else: a large volume of air that drifts between outdoor temperature and a bit above it, with no humidity control at all. That buffer sounds like an advantage and in winter it is. In July, when the shell is closed up and the roof deck is in full sun, that air gets hotter than the outdoor air and sits against the cooler walls all afternoon.

So the load on the room is not what a weather table says. It is what the surrounding space actually does, and on a tall unlined building the top of that space is the hottest part of it. Any cold room with a ceiling rather than a full-height wall is taking its worst load from above.

The cheap version of this fix is to insulate the shell's roof deck as well as the cold room, which costs more up front and makes everything inside the building behave more predictably. We will usually raise it, and we will tell you when the numbers do not justify it.

Vapour drive runs the opposite way to a house

This is the part that gets built wrong most often. In a heated building the moisture pushes from inside toward outside, so the vapour control goes on the warm interior face. In a cold room it is reversed: the warm, moist air is outside the room and it is pushing in, all year. Put a vapour retarder on the inside face of a cooler wall and you have trapped the drive on the wrong side.

Closed-cell foam sprayed as a continuous skin avoids the argument. At roughly two inches it is its own vapour barrier, there is no seam to tape and no staple hole, and it is on the correct side by construction because it is the whole assembly rather than a layer within it.

The two surfaces people skip

The floor and the door. A cold room on a slab with no insulation beneath it is pulling heat out of the ground continuously, and in a dryland yard the ground under a shed is not dry — it wicks. The door is worse, because it is the only moving part: a sliding or hinged cooler door with a worn gasket is a permanent gap in an otherwise sealed room, and on a farm cold room it is opened with a quarter of beef on a cart.

What the room is for changes the specification

A seed or chemical room wants cool and above all dry. A beef or game cooler wants a tight temperature band and a surface that can be washed down. A root cellar wants humidity kept up rather than driven out. These pull in different directions, and the sprayed thickness, the finish over the foam and the ventilation all follow from which one it is. Tell us the use before we quote, because the same box built for the other purpose is the wrong box.

Cold Storage Spray Foam Insulation Claresholm: Common Questions

Does it help that the cold room is inside another building? In winter, yes. In summer the air in an unlined shell gets hotter than outside, so the load can be worse than if the room stood outdoors.

Which side does the vapour barrier go on? The warm side, which for a cold room is the outside of it. That is the opposite of a house, and it is why a continuous sprayed skin is simpler than layered materials.

Do we need to insulate under the floor? If the room runs below the ground temperature, yes. A slab with damp ground beneath it is a steady load and it will show up as frost at the wall base.

How much does cold storage spray foam insulation cost in Claresholm? Priced per board foot of sprayed surface, so the number follows the six surfaces of the room and the depth the temperature band requires. Insulating the surrounding shell as well is a separate decision.

How do I choose a cold storage spray foam contractor in Claresholm? Ask what they will do about the door and the floor. A quote covering four walls and a ceiling has left out the two surfaces that usually fail.
