Cold storage spray foam insulation in Acheson is usually a room inside a room. A business on the industrial area west of Edmonton takes a bay of an existing steel warehouse and needs part of it held at a cooler or freezer temperature, so a box gets built inside the building. That arrangement is cheap to put up and unforgiving to get wrong, because the physics inside it run in the opposite direction to everything else on the property.

The cold side is inside, which reverses everything

In every other assembly we work on, the warm moist air is indoors and the cold surface is outdoors, so the vapour control goes on the inside. In a cold room the warm moist air is in the warehouse and the cold surface is the inside of the box, so the vapour control belongs on the warehouse side. Get that backwards and moisture is driven into the insulation continuously and has no route out, because the cold side is sealed. Closed-cell foam solves this by being its own vapour retarder at depth, applied in one continuous layer so there is no seam for the drive to exploit.

In January the drive reverses again

Here is the detail specific to an unheated or barely heated warehouse in this climate. A cooler held at a few degrees above freezing is colder than the warehouse in July and warmer than it in January, when the building around it is near outdoor temperature. So the direction the moisture wants to travel flips twice a year. A layered assembly built with a vapour barrier on one chosen side is right for half the year and wrong for the other half. A continuous closed-cell shell does not care which way the drive is pointing, which is why it is the sensible product for a cold room sitting inside a building that is itself cold.

Freezers and the floor

If the room is a freezer rather than a cooler, the slab becomes the serious item. A freezer sitting directly on a slab chills the ground beneath it, and ground that is held below freezing year-round will heave, which lifts and cracks the floor and eventually distorts the door frame enough that it stops sealing. That is why freezer floors are insulated underneath rather than left to the slab, and why a freezer retrofit onto an existing slab is a bigger decision than a cooler retrofit onto the same slab. It is worth getting that answered before anything is designed, not after.

The door frame and the corner

The two places a cold room leaks are the door and the corners. A door is a hole in a continuous shell with hardware through it, and the frame is almost always a thermal bridge from the warm side to the cold side, which is why a cold room door sweats and frosts around its perimeter when nothing else does. Corners are where panel systems meet and where a sprayed shell has the advantage, because it goes round the corner in one pass with nothing to tape. On a retrofit into an existing bay, we spend more time on the door surround and the junctions than on the flat areas.

Running equipment deserves the honest version

Insulation is not refrigeration. A well-sealed box reduces the load on the plant, lets it cycle less and holds temperature longer when the power or the compressor stops, and in an industrial setting that last point is the one operators care about most. What it does not do is make an undersized system adequate. If the room is not holding temperature now, the first question is whether the load or the plant is the problem, and the answer determines whether insulation is the fix or only part of it.

Cold Storage Spray Foam Insulation Acheson: Common Questions

Which side does the vapour barrier go on in a cold room? The warm side, which in a cold room means the warehouse side rather than the inside. Closed-cell foam at depth is its own vapour retarder, which is why a continuous sprayed shell avoids the question.

Our cooler sits in an unheated warehouse. Does that change anything? Yes. The warehouse is warmer than the cooler in summer and colder in winter, so the moisture drive reverses twice a year, and a one-sided layered assembly is only ever right for part of it.

Do we have to insulate under a freezer floor? For a freezer, effectively yes. Ground held below freezing year-round heaves, and that damages the slab and eventually the door seal.

How much does cold storage spray foam insulation cost in Acheson? It is priced per board foot over the sprayed surface, and cold rooms carry more thickness than a comparable warehouse wall, so depth matters more here than area. The door surround, the corners and whether the floor is in scope account for most of the variation.

How do I choose a cold storage spray foam contractor in Acheson? Ask which side they are putting the vapour control on and why, then ask what they intend to do at the door frame. Both answers separate somebody who has built a cold room from somebody who has insulated a wall.
