Cold storage spray foam insulation in Stony Plain is nearly always a room built inside an older building, because a town with a downtown of this age has very little purpose-built refrigerated space and a good deal of improvised space.

A room built inside a building that predates it by decades

The typical arrangement here is a cold room framed into the back of a downtown unit, or a corner of an older commercial building, by whoever needed one at the time. That means the room's boundaries are not six panels. They are frequently an original masonry wall on one or two sides, a stud partition on another, and a ceiling that is whatever the building has. Establishing what each of the six surfaces actually is comes before any discussion of thickness, and on a room like this it regularly turns out that two of them are the same surface as the building's exterior.

Where a masonry wall is one side of a cold room

This is the situation that causes the most trouble and it is common in an older downtown. A cold room built directly against a solid exterior wall puts a controlled low temperature on the inside of a wall that is taking weather on the outside, with no cavity and no vapour control between them. In winter that wall is cold on both faces and it is fine. In summer it is warm and humid on the outside and cold on the inside, and the dew point sits inside the masonry. A continuous sprayed layer on the room side is what stops that, because it is the insulation and the vapour control together.

The floor is the surface nobody insulates

A cold room built inside an existing building is almost always sitting on that building's original slab, with nothing between the room and the ground but concrete. The walls get panels or foam, the ceiling gets something, and the floor gets whatever was already there. That matters more on a cold room than anywhere else in this trade, because the temperature difference across it is permanent and the ground underneath never warms up. It is also the one surface that cannot be improved without taking the room out of service and doing real work. On an existing room the honest position is to say what it is costing rather than to pretend the walls will make up for it, and on a room being built or rebuilt it is the decision worth getting right first.

What the building above and behind it is doing

A room built inside an older building shares its problems. If the floor above is unheated storage, the room's ceiling is losing to it. If the wall behind is against an unheated stair or an alley, the same applies. On a Stony Plain building the useful assessment covers what is on the far side of each of the room's surfaces rather than just the room itself, because half the load on these is coming from spaces the operator does not think of as part of the problem.

Cold Storage Spray Foam Insulation Stony Plain: Common Questions

What if one wall of the room is the outside wall of the building? That is common here and it is the one that needs the most care, particularly in summer.

Why does the compressor run constantly? On a small room that is nearly always the junctions rather than the plant.

Is a thicker wall the answer? Rarely. An unbroken boundary of ordinary depth beats a thick one with open corners.
