Why closed-cell dominates this application
Three properties matter in cold storage, and closed-cell is the only spray-applied product that has all three.
- Low vapour permeance. In a cooler, vapour drive runs from the warm outside toward the cold inside, continuously, all year. An assembly that lets vapour through accumulates ice inside the insulation, and ice is not insulation.
- High R per inch. Freezer envelopes need real R-value and the depth is usually constrained by the structure.
- Continuity. A cold room fails at its junctions - wall to ceiling, wall to floor, around penetrations. Foam is monolithic across those junctions.
Open-cell is not appropriate in a freezer envelope.
The vapour direction is the thing people get wrong
In a normal Alberta building the vapour retarder goes on the warm side, which is the inside. In a cooler or freezer the warm side is the outside, and an assembly detailed the ordinary way traps moisture in exactly the wrong place.
This is why a cold room built by someone who has only done conventional buildings ices up in its second winter. Get the assembly designed for the direction of drive, not by habit.
Freezer floors are a separate problem
A freezer sitting on grade will freeze the ground beneath it, and frozen ground heaves. Under-slab insulation and, in colder applications, sub-slab heating are part of the design rather than an upgrade. If a bidder has not raised the floor with you, they are not thinking about the whole box.
Conversions and retrofits
A large share of Alberta cold-storage work is conversion: taking part of a warehouse and turning it into a cooler, or upgrading an old room whose panels are failing. These jobs live or die on the junctions between the new envelope and the existing building, and on what happens where the new insulation stops.
Spray foam is well suited to conversions precisely because it seals to irregular existing structure that panel systems cannot follow.

Can spray foam replace insulated metal panel? It is a different assembly with different economics rather than a drop-in replacement. Foam excels on irregular structure, on retrofit, and where continuity across junctions is the priority. Panel systems have their own advantages in new build. The right answer comes from the specific room.
What thickness does a freezer need? Considerably more than a cooler, and it is set by the design temperature difference and the run-time economics rather than by a rule of thumb. This is a design question, not a quote question - our installers will work it from your target temperature.
Will it stop the icing we already have? If the icing is caused by vapour reaching a cold surface through a permeable or discontinuous assembly, then a properly detailed closed-cell envelope removes the cause. If it is caused by a door seal, an air curtain, or a defrost problem, insulation will not fix it. Worth diagnosing before spending.
Does the foam need a thermal barrier? Exposed foam plastics have fire-protection requirements set by the building code, and cold-storage occupancies have their own considerations. We confirm the required assembly for your room before work starts.
