What actually damages equipment in an unsealed shed

Steel roofing over stored machinery behaves like a condenser. On a clear night the panel radiates heat to the sky and drops below the temperature of the air beneath it. Any moisture in that air - off a machine that came in warm, off a wet floor, off the ground itself - condenses on the underside and falls.

That is why owners describe it as raining indoors. It is also why the damage shows up as rust on hydraulic rams, corroded electrical connectors and mould in cab interiors rather than as anything to do with temperature.

Foam solves the moisture problem first

Closed-cell sprayed to the underside of the roof deck and the inside of the walls puts an insulating, vapour-controlling layer between the interior air and the cold panel. There is no longer a surface at the dew point, so there is nothing to condense on.

That single change usually matters more to a machine shed owner than the R-value does - though the R-value is what makes the building heatable if that ever becomes the plan.

Unheated, tempered, or heated

• Unheated storage. Two inches of closed-cell is normally enough to break the condensation cycle and keep the shell dry.
• Tempered. Three inches, where you want to hold the building above freezing for winter servicing without conditioning it properly.

Post-frame sheds have a specific weak point

Most Alberta machine sheds are post-frame. The girts and purlins create a continuous thermal and air path from inside to outside, and conventional insulation stops at every one of them.

Foam sprayed continuously across the framing bridges those breaks instead of stopping at them. This is the single biggest performance difference between a foamed post-frame building and a batted one, and it is why the effective R of a foamed shed tracks much closer to its nominal R.

Do I need to insulate a shed I never heat? Usually yes, for moisture rather than heat. An unheated shed still condenses, and condensation is what costs you equipment. Two inches of closed-cell is a different job and a different price from a heated build-out.

Can foam be sprayed with equipment still inside? No. The bays need to be clear and masked, and there is a re-entry period after spraying. Plan the job for a window when the shed can be emptied - most Alberta owners book it between seasons for this reason.

What about the open end or the big doors? A shed that stays open at one end cannot be conditioned, but the roof deck can still be foamed to stop the drip onto equipment. Large doors are the biggest remaining loss once the shell is sealed, and sealing the door perimeter is normally part of the scope.

Will foam stick to a dusty steel building? Not reliably. Surface preparation is part of the quote, and a bidder who skips it is bidding a job that will delaminate.
