A machine shed holds the most valuable movable assets on a Leduc County farm, and it is almost always the building given the least thought. Machine shed spray foam insulation in Devon starts with a question the owner has to answer before anyone can price anything: are you trying to keep the equipment dry, or are you trying to keep it warm? Those are two different buildings and two very different numbers.

Dry is cheap and warm is expensive

Keeping equipment dry means preventing condensation on cold metal. It needs a continuous layer on the inside of the cladding so the panel surface never falls below the dew point of the air in the building, and it needs enough air exchange to carry away the moisture that comes in on machinery. It does not need a heated building and it does not need a thick assembly.

Keeping equipment warm means a heated, sealed, properly insulated building that a tractor can be started in on a February morning without an hour of plugging in. It costs several times as much and it is the right answer for some operations and an extravagance for others.

The mistake we see is the shed quoted as if it were a shop when the owner only ever wanted the first one.

Why machinery sweats in a shed

Equipment has enormous thermal mass. Steel, cast iron and fluid hold their temperature far longer than the air around them, so when a warm front moves through after a cold spell, the air warms in hours and the tractor does not. Humid warm air then condenses on cold metal, and the machine is wet while the shed floor is dry.

That is why a machine shed can rust its contents while never getting rained on, and why a spring thaw does more damage in an uninsulated shed than a winter does. Insulating the shell reduces the swing the metal inside is exposed to and slows the rate at which warm humid air reaches cold surfaces.

The door is most of the building

A machine shed is dominated by openings large enough to drive a combine through, and on many sheds the doors are sliders with daylight visible around them. A shed with a sealed shell and unsealed doors has not been sealed. If the doors are not going to be addressed, be honest about it and spend the money on the roof plane instead, where it will at least stop the dripping.

Dirt floors and ground moisture

Plenty of machine sheds around here have gravel or dirt floors, and bare ground evaporates water continuously into the building. That moisture has to condense somewhere and the coldest surface is the equipment. A sealed ground cover is a cheap item that removes a continuous source, and it changes the result more than another inch of foam would.

Steel on steel

These are steel buildings, so the framing bridges straight from inside to outside and the inside face of the panel sits near outdoor temperature. Closed-cell foam at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch adheres to the panel and over the framing, becomes its own vapour barrier at about two inches, and puts the dew point inside the foam. That is the mechanism that keeps the metal dry.

Machine Shed Spray Foam Insulation Devon: Common Questions

Why does equipment rust in a dry shed? Because the metal stays cold while the air warms, and warm humid air condenses on it. It is a thermal mass problem, not a roof problem.

Do we need to heat it? Only if you need to work in it or start machinery cold. Keeping equipment dry is a much cheaper objective and is what most sheds actually need.

What about the big sliding doors? They are usually the biggest opening in the building. A sealed shell with leaking doors is not a sealed shell.

How much does machine shed spray foam insulation cost in Devon? Priced per board foot of sprayed area, so the shell area and the thickness set it. Dry-only is a thinner specification than a heated shop, which is why answering the dry-or-warm question first changes the quote.

How do I choose a machine shed contractor in Devon? Ask them which objective they have quoted. If they cannot tell you whether the building will be heated afterwards, they have not understood the brief.
