Metal building spray foam insulation in Devon is work on the steel-framed buildings in and around the town: service and equipment buildings on the light industrial side, the oilfield service yards and airport corridor east of here, and the steel shops and storage buildings on the Leduc County acreages. They are the fastest buildings in Alberta to put up and the least forgiving envelope to retrofit, and the reason is the same in both cases. There is no cavity.

Steel has no cavity and no tolerance

A conventional wall has a stud bay to put something in. A steel building has cladding screwed to purlins and girts, with the framing standing proud on the inside. There is nothing to fill. Any insulation has to be attached to a surface rather than placed in a space, and that single structural fact rules out most of what works in a house.

Thermal bridging is not a detail here, it is the main event

Steel conducts heat hundreds of times better than wood. Every purlin and girt is a continuous metal path from the inside of the building to the cladding, and every fastener is a small one. So the inside face of the steel runs close to outdoor temperature regardless of what is between the members. You can see it: on a cold morning the inside of a metal building shows the frame as frost lines or wet stripes on the panel, a perfect map of the steel behind it.

The only thing that changes that is a continuous layer over the steel, not between it.

Condensation is what damages the building

Warm humid interior air reaching a surface at outdoor temperature gives up its water there. On steel the water runs rather than soaking in, which means it drips onto stock, onto equipment, down the inside of the wall and into the base channel. Rust at the base of panels, wet floors under the eave line and dripping onto whatever is stored below are the complaints that bring us out, and they are a vapour problem, not a heating problem.

Closed-cell foam at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch becomes its own vapour barrier at about two inches, adheres directly to the panel and the framing, and leaves no gap and no path. That is why it is the specification on steel and not merely one option.

What the vinyl-faced blanket does over time

Most of these buildings were insulated at erection with a fibreglass blanket laid over the purlins and compressed by the cladding. Compressed, it delivers a fraction of its rated value. Over a decade or two the facing tears, the blanket sags between purlins, and the sag opens a pocket where air circulates against cold steel. Walk through an older building here and you will see it drooping between the members. Foam does not sag because it is adhered.

The practical conditions for spraying steel

The panel has to be clean, dry and above a minimum temperature for the foam to bond, which in Devon means planning the work for the right part of the year or providing temporary heat. Where the building is occupied by equipment or stock, masking and ventilation are part of the job. And in concealed or occupied space, a code-required barrier goes over the foam.

One company, start to finish

On metal building spray foam insulation Devon, the people who quote the work are the people who do it. We insulate it ourselves and we answer for the result.

Metal Building Spray Foam Insulation Devon: Common Questions

Why does our metal building sweat? Warm moist inside air meets steel sitting at outdoor temperature. The water condenses on the panel and the framing and runs down from there.

Can we just add more blanket insulation? Not usefully. The problem is that the steel bridges straight through, and a blanket between purlins leaves that bridge in place while the sag opens an air pocket.

Will foam stop the dripping? Yes, if it is continuous and thick enough to put the dew point inside the foam rather than on the steel. That is the specification, not an incidental benefit.

How much does metal building spray foam insulation cost in Devon? Priced per board foot over the sprayed area, so wall and roof area and thickness drive it. Clearing or masking stored equipment and temperature at the time of work are the other variables.

How do I choose a metal building contractor in Devon? Ask whether they intend to spray over the framing or only between it. Only the continuous version solves the condensation.
