Metal building spray foam insulation in Vermilion covers a larger and more varied stock than a town this size would suggest, because the agricultural college campus brings institutional steel buildings into the mix alongside the farm and highway ones. Arenas, livestock and equipment buildings, teaching shops and highway service buildings are all pre-engineered steel, and they all have the same two problems with different consequences.

The frame is a heat path through the insulation

A pre-engineered building is a steel frame with purlins across the roof and girts across the walls, and the cladding screwed to those. Steel conducts heat roughly a thousand times better than the insulation around it, so every purlin and girt is a path straight from inside to outside. Insulation laid between them does nothing about that path, which is why a building insulated to a respectable nominal value can still show frost lines on the cladding exactly where the girts are. The fix is a continuous layer, and sprayed foam applied to the inside face of the cladding and over the flanges is the practical way to get one in an existing building.

Fibreglass behind steel cladding does not last

The original insulation in most of these buildings was a faced blanket draped over the frame before the cladding went on. It is compressed to nothing at every fastener, it sags between the girts, and the facing is a vapour retarder in a position that only works if it is perfectly sealed, which it never stays. Air gets behind it, reaches cold steel, and condenses. The blanket absorbs the water, loses what performance it had, and sheds it onto whatever is below. Closed-cell foam at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch adheres to the steel so there is no gap, and at about two inches it is its own vapour barrier, which removes the condensing surface instead of insulating in front of it.

An arena is a different building physics problem

A large-volume building with a roof high above the floor stratifies: the warm air collects at the top, so the roof plane sees a much larger temperature difference than the walls. In an arena or any high building the roof is therefore disproportionately important, and it is also the surface that condensation forms on and drips from. Where the building holds livestock or a crowd, that moisture load is substantial and the roof plane has to be the first part of the envelope dealt with.

Occupied buildings need the covering

Foam in an occupied institutional or commercial building needs a code-compliant thermal barrier or an approved covering over it. In a teaching shop, an arena or any space people use, that is not optional and it is not an upgrade; it is part of the assembly and belongs in the specification and the quote from the start. On a farm storage building the requirement is different, which is one reason the same foam job costs differently in two buildings of the same size.

What air sealing adds on top

Steel buildings leak at the base angle, at every overhead and sliding door, at the eave and ridge closures and wherever a penetration was cut after the building went up. Insulation does not stop air movement, so a sprayed envelope is worth considerably more when those lines are deliberately sealed as part of the work. On the open parkland around Vermilion that wind is sustained and the leaks are being driven, not drifting.

Metal Building Spray Foam Insulation Vermilion: Common Questions

Why are there frost lines on the inside of our cladding? They mark the girts and purlins. Steel carries heat straight through, and insulation between the framing does not interrupt that path.

Why did the original blanket insulation fail? It sagged, compressed at the fasteners and let air reach cold steel behind it. Once it absorbed condensation it stopped performing.

Does the roof matter more than the walls? In a high building, yes. Warm air stratifies to the top, so the roof plane carries the biggest temperature difference and the condensation.

How much does metal building spray foam insulation cost in Vermilion? Priced per board foot of sprayed area, so area and thickness set the base. Whether the building is occupied matters, because an occupied space needs a thermal barrier over the foam.

How do I choose a metal building spray foam contractor in Vermilion? Ask how they treat the girt and purlin flanges and what goes over the foam. Those two answers separate a continuous assembly from a nominal one.
