The shop problem: intermittent heat

A house is heated continuously. A shop is heated when someone is in it.

That difference drives everything. A shop with a poor envelope and a big heater will warm the air quickly and lose it just as fast, and the steel, the concrete and the equipment never come up to temperature at all. You end up with warm air and a cold building, which is why it still feels cold with the heater running.

A well-sealed, well-insulated shop holds its heat between uses, so the mass of the building stays warm and it comes back to a working temperature in minutes instead of hours.

Moisture is the second half

A working shop generates moisture: snow off a vehicle, a wash bay, combustion from an unvented heater, wet gear drying out.

In a bare steel building that moisture condenses on the panel and rains back down onto tools and equipment. Closed-cell bonded to the inside of the shell removes the cold surface and controls the vapour drive at the same time. See metal buildings.

In-floor heat changes the calculation

A large share of Alberta shops run in-floor hydronic heat, and it is the right pairing with a foamed envelope - the slab becomes the thermal mass that a sealed building can actually hold onto.

Two things follow. First, under-slab insulation matters enormously and is cheap at the time of the pour and expensive forever afterwards. If you are building, insulate under the slab. Second, in-floor heat responds slowly, which makes envelope performance more important rather than less.

What a shop scope should cover

• Walls and roof deck, continuous across the girts and purlins.
• The overhead doors, which are the largest remaining loss once the shell is sealed. An insulated door with good seals is part of the envelope.
• The man doors and window openings, sealed at the perimeter.
• The wall-to-slab junction, which is continuous around the building and routinely missed.

A quote covering only the flat wall and roof area is quoting a partial job.

How thick for an Alberta shop? Commonly three to four inches of closed-cell in the walls and four to six in the roof for a genuinely heated, worked-in shop. Less if you only want it tempered. Set on site against how you use it.

Can it be sprayed with tools and equipment inside? No. The area needs to be cleared and masked, with a re-entry period afterwards. Most owners plan it for a seasonal window.

Does the foam need covering? Exposed foam plastics have thermal-barrier requirements under the building code. Many Alberta shops finish with steel liner or drywall. We confirm the requirement for your building.

Is it worth doing if the shop is already insulated with the vinyl-faced blanket? Usually yes. The blanket is compressed at every purlin, sags away from the panel, and has almost always torn. Retrofit means removing it, which is real cost - but the performance difference is large.
