Shop spray foam insulation in Three Hills is usually not a job on a free-standing shop. On a Kneehill County grain yard the shop is one end of a bigger building: a bay or two partitioned off a shed, with the rest of the building left cold for machinery and storage. That arrangement is sensible and cheap, and it creates one detail that decides whether the shop works.

The internal wall is an exterior wall

Whatever divides the heated bay from the cold part of the building has winter on one side of it. It is an exterior wall in every sense that matters, and it was almost never built as one. What is usually there is a stud wall sheeted on the shop side only, with batt in the cavity, open at the top where it meets the trusses, open at the bottom where it meets the slab, and open along any girt that passes through it. Air moves through that wall freely in both directions, which means the shop is in continuous exchange with a space held at outdoor temperature by a building with large doors.

Owners spend money on the outside walls and the ceiling and then cannot work out why the shop still will not hold heat. It is the wall they did not count as a wall.

What it needs

Sealed to the deck or to a properly closed ceiling plane above it, sealed to the slab at the bottom, and continuous foam across the framing rather than between it so the studs and any steel passing through are not bridging. If the shop has a ceiling and the cold side does not, the junction where the ceiling stops is the leak, and that edge has to be closed properly rather than tucked.

Recovery is the number the owner experiences

A farm shop is heated when somebody is in it. Nobody holds a shop at a working temperature through February for a building used on winter evenings and hard for two weeks in spring. So what matters is not the steady-state loss, it is how long the building takes to become usable from cold — and that is governed far more by air leakage than by R-value, because the air you heat leaves and is replaced by cold air at whatever rate the building leaks. Sealing the shell, and especially that internal wall, is what turns a four-hour warm-up into something reasonable.

The slab, and the one decision that cannot be revisited

Concrete is a large thermal mass and it is in contact with the ground. A shop can have warm air in it and a slab that is still cold, which is why the building feels cold to stand in long after the thermostat is satisfied. If there is in-floor heat, that effect is the whole point of the system and it is also why under-slab and slab-edge insulation decide whether it works: heat leaves a slab fastest at the perimeter, where the concrete is nearest to outdoor air and frost. On an existing slab there is nothing to be done about what is underneath it, but the edge can sometimes be reached from outside. On a new pour it is the item to get right, because it is the only one in the building that cannot be added later.

Welding, and what covers the foam

A shop is a building with sparks in it. Foam has to be covered to meet the thermal barrier requirement wherever it is exposed, and in a shop that covering is doing a second job as well — taking knocks and keeping sparks off the insulation. That covering is a separate trade from spraying, and it belongs in the plan from the start rather than being caught up later.

Shop Spray Foam Insulation Three Hills: Common Questions

We insulated the shop and it still will not hold heat. Why? Check the wall between the shop and the cold part of the building. It is an exterior wall and it is usually open at the top, the bottom and anywhere a girt passes through.

Why does the shop feel cold when the air is warm? The slab. Concrete is slow, it is in contact with the ground, and it stays cold long after the air has come up.

Does sealing matter more than R-value in a shop? For recovery from cold, yes. Air leaving and being replaced by cold air is what makes a shop slow to warm, and insulation does not stop air movement — air sealing does.

How much does shop spray foam insulation cost in Three Hills? Sprayed area and depth set the base, the covering over the foam is its own item, and the internal partition is a real part of the scope rather than an afterthought.

How do I choose a shop spray foam contractor in Three Hills? Ask whether the wall to the cold side is in the quote. If it is not, the most important surface in the building has been left out.
