A shop has to be comfortable for people working in it, which sets a higher bar than a storage building. It also usually has a large door, a concrete floor, and often a heating system that was chosen before anyone thought about the envelope. Shop spray foam insulation in Calgary is specified to that higher standard rather than to a storage standard.

If the shop has in-floor heat

This is common in Alberta shops and it changes the priorities.

In-floor heating works by warming a large thermal mass and letting it radiate gently. It is comfortable and efficient in a well-sealed building. In a leaky one it is slow and expensive, because the slab cannot respond quickly to heat being carried away.

Two things follow.

Sealing matters more, not less. A radiant system cannot chase a draught the way a forced-air heater can blast through it. Air leakage undermines radiant heating disproportionately.

Slab edge losses are real. Heat moves outward and downward from a heated slab, and the perimeter is where it escapes to the outside. If the shop is being built or the floor is being replaced, under-slab and slab-edge insulation is the moment to address it. Afterwards, it is not practical.

If you have in-floor heat and the shop still feels cold, the answer is very unlikely to be more heat. It is almost always the envelope.

Chinook swings

Calgary's winter crosses freezing repeatedly. For a shop that means the building is warming and cooling far more often than in a steady climate, and every cycle moves moisture.

Vehicles bring in snow and slush that evaporates while the shop is warm, then condenses on cold surfaces when the temperature drops again. Over a season that is a lot of water cycling through the building, and it finds the coldest surfaces - the steel deck and the framing.

If you see wet patches that appear during a warm spell and vanish afterwards, that is the mechanism. See stopping condensation in a metal building.

Mezzanines and offices inside the shop

Many Calgary shops have an office or mezzanine built into one corner. That creates a small conditioned space inside a large, variably heated one, and the boundary between them is rarely treated as a boundary at all.

If the office is uncomfortable, insulating and sealing that internal envelope is usually far cheaper and more effective than trying to condition the whole shop to suit it. Sound is often part of the complaint too, and that is a different material conversation - open-cell performs better acoustically than closed-cell.

Say which you are solving for, comfort or noise. They pull in different directions.

Acreage shops

For shops outside the city, heating is frequently propane or electric rather than natural gas, which costs more per unit and shortens the payback on sealing. If more than one building needs doing, one visit covering all of them is cheaper per square foot than separate trips.

Shop Spray Foam Insulation Calgary: Common Questions

What makes a shop different from a garage? People work in it, which sets a higher comfort standard and usually means it is heated deliberately rather than incidentally.

Does it need to be heated to be worth insulating? If you are heating it at all, sealing it changes how much that costs. If it is unheated, the case is condensation on tools and equipment instead.

How fast should it recover after the door opens? That is the number that matters in a working Calgary shop, and it depends far more on the air seal than on the peak temperature the heater can reach.

How much does shop spray foam insulation cost in Calgary? What is in the shop changes the specification more than its size does: in-floor heat, a mezzanine, an office built inside the envelope. Chinook swings then decide how hard the assembly has to work between the warm days and the cold nights.

Best shop spray foam insulation contractor in Calgary? Ask what they would do differently because the shop has in-floor heat, or a mezzanine, or neither. A quote that never asks what is inside the building has priced a box.
