The shop that gets built on an acreage outside this town usually belongs to somebody who works in the city all week. It is a weekend building. It gets heated on a Saturday morning, used for a day or two, and then shut down again, and that pattern of use is the whole reason the complaints about these buildings are so consistent.

A building that starts from cold every weekend

Insulation advice is usually written for a building that is held at a temperature continuously. A weekend shop is not. It sits at outdoor temperature for five days, then somebody turns the heat on and expects to be comfortable in an hour.

The air in the building will come up in an hour. Everything solid in it will not. The slab, the frame, the tools, the vehicle on the floor and the concrete walls all have mass, and mass takes a long time to change temperature. So the owner stands in air at twenty degrees with his feet on a floor at four degrees, and reports that the shop is cold, which it is, in the only place his body is touching it.

The slab is the thing nobody insulated

A concrete floor poured on grade with no insulation beneath it or around its edge is in direct thermal contact with the ground. Through a southern Alberta winter that ground is cold and the slab follows it. A heater blowing warm air across the top of it will take two days to lift it, by which time the weekend is over and the heat goes off again.

If the shop is still being built, this is the one item that cannot be bought later: under-slab insulation and an insulated slab edge, and in-floor heat if the budget allows, because a heated slab turns the mass from a liability into a flywheel that holds the building steady between visits. If the shop already exists, the honest options are a lower thermostat setting left on continuously through the cold months so the slab never fully drops, or accepting a cold floor and dressing for it. We will not pretend foam on the walls fixes a floor.

What the shell does, and it is a lot

Sealing and insulating the walls and roof of a weekend shop changes two things that genuinely matter. It makes the recovery fast, so the air is usable in a reasonable time on a Saturday morning rather than at noon. And it makes keeping a low background temperature through the week affordable, which is the strategy that actually solves the floor.

Closed-cell at about R-6 to R-7 per inch bonded to the inside of the cladding does the sealing and the insulating in one pass and removes the condensing surface from the steel at the same time. In a building where a vehicle comes in wet and snowy and then sits for five days, that last part is not a side benefit.

The door and the base of the wall

The overhead door is the largest thin component and its weatherstripping is the cheapest repair on the property. Below it, the gap where the wall cladding meets the slab is open on a surprising number of these buildings, and a line of foam there is a small item with an immediate result at floor level, which is where comfort is actually measured.

The covering requirement

If the building is used as a workplace or has a space in it people occupy, the sprayed foam cannot simply be left exposed, and the covering over it is part of the job rather than an extra. Welding in a shop is another reason to take that seriously rather than treat it as paperwork.

Shop Spray Foam Insulation Coaldale: Common Questions

The air is warm and the floor is freezing. Why? Because the slab has mass and no insulation under it. Air changes temperature in minutes and a concrete floor takes days.

Is it cheaper to leave the heat on low all week? In a sealed and insulated building it usually is cheaper than reheating from cold every weekend, and it is the only thing that keeps the slab from dropping.

Can the floor be fixed after the fact? Not economically from above without a new topping or a new slab. That is why under-slab insulation and the slab edge are decided at the pour and not later.

How much does shop spray foam insulation cost in Coaldale? It is priced per board foot over the sprayed area, so wall and roof area times thickness sets the material, and the required covering over the foam is a separate line. Any existing insulation that has to come out first is the other variable.

How do I choose a shop spray foam contractor in Coaldale? Tell them it is a weekend building and see whether the answer changes. If the recommendation is the same as for a continuously heated shop, they were not listening.
