The third building behind the house on a deep lot is usually the shop, and in a town like this it was built by the person who uses it. Shop spray foam insulation in Raymond is work on that building: tall enough to get something in under the door, framed from whatever was being milled that year, heated by a single unit heater hung in one corner, and used for welding, equipment repair and projects by somebody who is standing on the concrete for hours at a time.

The heat is at the ceiling and the work is at the floor

This is the complaint we hear most often about these buildings and it is a geometry problem, not a heater problem. A single unit heater puts hot air into a tall volume. Hot air rises and stays up there, because nothing is moving it back down and because the roof above it is the surface losing heat fastest. So the top three metres of the building are pleasant and the floor, where the person and the work are, is cold. Owners respond by buying a bigger heater, which makes the ceiling hotter and the floor no warmer. The actual fix is the ceiling plane: insulate and seal it so the heat is not disappearing out of the top of the building, and the stratification reduces on its own because the air at the top stops cooling and sinking down the walls in a loop.

Then the floor, and why the slab matters

On an owner-built shop the slab was poured without perimeter insulation and often without anything under it. Concrete in contact with the ground around the edge loses heat sideways to outdoor soil all winter, and a cold slab is felt directly through boots. There is no retrofit that insulates under an existing slab, but the perimeter is reachable: insulating the inside face of the wall down to the slab, and the slab edge itself, cuts the biggest part of that loss. If the shop is ever re-floored or extended, under-slab insulation is the one item worth insisting on.

Recovery after the door opens, not peak temperature

A shop door is enormous and it opens. When it does, the air in the building leaves in seconds and the useful question becomes how long the building takes to get back, not what temperature it holds when closed. Recovery is governed by air leakage and by how much heat is stored in the structure, so sealing the shell and getting the ceiling plane continuous does more for recovery than extra heater capacity does. The door perimeter is part of it: the head, the jambs and the two bottom corners where no seal ever quite meets.

Condensation on tools and bright steel

Warm humid air inside a shop, cold steel surfaces, and the water goes onto whatever is coldest. In a building with a steel roof deck that is the underside of the deck, and it drips onto the bench and the machine below. On a cold morning after a warm evening of welding it goes onto the tools themselves. Closed-cell foam adhered to the underside of the deck removes the cold surface, and because it becomes its own vapour control at roughly two inches there is no air space behind it for moisture to reach the steel through.

Welding, the covering requirement and the finish

Two things to settle before anybody prices it. First, foam facing an occupied space needs a thermal barrier over it, normally 12.7 mm drywall, and a shop somebody works in is occupied space. Second, where there is welding or cutting, the covering is not optional and the layout of the work area relative to the sprayed surfaces is worth thinking about. A shop that has been sprayed and then finished properly is a better building to work in and a safer one; a shop that has been sprayed and left bare is an unfinished job.

Decide how warm it has to be

A shop held just above freezing so nothing bursts and nothing rusts is a modest specification. A shop held at a temperature a person can work in all day with their hands exposed is a substantially different one, and it is worth saying which you want, because it sets the thickness, the heater and whether the floor is worth addressing at all.

Shop Spray Foam Insulation Raymond: Common Questions

Why is it hot at the ceiling and cold at the floor? Because the heat is rising into an uninsulated roof and being lost there. Sealing and insulating the ceiling plane is what reduces the stratification.

Will a bigger heater fix it? It will make the top of the building hotter. The floor stays cold because the loss is at the roof and the slab edge.

Can anything be done about the cold floor? The perimeter and the slab edge, yes. Under an existing slab, no. Insist on under-slab insulation if you ever pour again.

How much does shop spray foam insulation cost in Raymond? Priced per board foot over the sprayed area at the chosen thickness, plus the thermal barrier the occupancy requires. The ceiling plane is usually the best value part of the scope.

How do I choose a shop spray foam contractor in Raymond? Ask whether the quote includes the covering over the foam. A number without it is not comparable to a number with it.
