Barn spray foam insulation in Taber is almost never about animals. The barns still standing on these yards stopped holding livestock a long time ago, and what they are now is whatever the operation needed at the time: a shop, a store, a place to put things that had nowhere else to go.

A building designed for one job doing another

That mismatch is the whole subject. A barn was built with animal heat in mind, ventilation to carry away what animals produce, and a layout organised around getting stock in and out. Take the animals away and none of those features helps: the ventilation is now just air leakage, the layout is in the way, and the heat that made the building work is gone. So a barn used as a shop is a large, cold, draughty building with an awkward floor plan, and it should be assessed as that rather than as a barn.

Closing up a frame that has been drying through those gaps for decades

These were deliberately open, and closing one up changes how it dries. Where a Taber barn is now holding equipment, tools or anything paper, that is usually the right direction, but it has to be done knowing that the timber has been drying through those openings for decades. Sealing without a deliberate way for moisture to leave puts water into a frame that has been dry for a very long time, and old timber does not forgive it quickly.

A room inside it beats the whole building, nearly always

The volume in one of these is enormous relative to what anybody needs warm, and the structure makes a poor envelope no matter what is spent on it. Building a properly sealed room inside the shell, insulated to a real standard, and leaving the rest as covered dry storage costs a fraction of conditioning the barn and it produces somewhere genuinely usable. That is the recommendation on most Taber yards and it is the one owners resist, because it feels like giving up on the barn.

The floor is what actually stops most of these being useful

Nobody mentions the floor and it is the reason a converted barn stays half converted. What is down there is dirt in the older part, concrete poured in two or three eras at different levels, and the gutters, drains and curbs that were laid out for stock and never taken up. That is not a surface anybody can work on, roll a jack across or keep clean, and no amount of insulation overhead changes it. On a Taber barn the floor decides whether the building becomes a shop or stays a store, and it is worth pricing before the envelope rather than after, because it frequently changes the answer about the envelope.

Barn Spray Foam Insulation Taber: Common Questions

Does it still matter if there is nothing living in it now? Then it is a large cold shed with an awkward layout, and it gets assessed as one.

Should we insulate the whole thing? Rarely. A sealed room inside the shell costs a fraction and works far better.

Is it worth doing at all? Sometimes not. The roof and the foundation get looked at before anything is quoted.
