About 46% of homes in Crossfield were built before 1991, which makes this town an unusually even split rather than an old town or a new one. Spray foam insulation in Crossfield therefore starts with a question that does not come up in most places we work: which half of the town is the house in. The answer changes the diagnosis completely, and a quote written without asking it is guessing.

The townsite grid and the subdivision edge

The original grid sits beside the rail line, on narrow lots, and the houses on it were framed across several decades when nobody expected a wall to be airtight. Walk ten minutes out and the stock changes to subdivisions put up since 1991, with engineered floors, attached double garages and rooms built over them. Those two groups fail in opposite ways. The older houses leak through the shell everywhere at once and have little insulation anywhere. The newer ones have adequate depth almost everywhere and a handful of concentrated weak points that the depth does nothing about. One town, two jobs.

Nothing shelters a house here

Crossfield sits on open farmland with the highway corridor to one side and quarter sections in every direction. There is no river valley, no coulee and no stand of mature spruce to slow the wind down, so whatever is blowing hits the wall at full strength. That matters because air leakage is driven by pressure, and a leak that trickles on a calm day in a sheltered neighbourhood runs hard here. It is also why owners on the newer edge of town report draughts in houses whose insulation depth is entirely adequate on paper.

Chinook cycling instead of one long freeze

This part of the province does not sit at one temperature for the winter. The warm wind comes through, everything above grade swings back above freezing, and then it drops again. Each pass of that cycle moves moisture in an assembly: water vapour condenses on a cold surface, the surface warms, the water is released into whatever material is against it, and the next cold snap does it again. Material that absorbs water does badly under that treatment. Closed-cell foam does not absorb it, and at roughly two inches it is a vapour barrier in its own right, which is why it does well on the surfaces that cycle.

Where the money actually goes in each half

On a pre-1991 house in the grid the order is almost always the rim joist first, because it is the coldest accessible surface and the fastest to fix, then the basement walls if the space is used, then the attic and the walls. On a newer house the list is short and specific: the floor over the garage, the cantilever, the attic penetrations and whatever the builder left behind at the joist ends. We would rather spray a tenth of a newer house correctly than all of it pointlessly. Pricing follows board feet of sprayed area and the target R-value, so a tightly scoped job on the right surfaces is a different proposition from a whole-house spray.

Who does the work

We do spray foam insulation Crossfield ourselves. We scope and quote it, we book it, and our own installers spray it -- one company, one point of contact.

Spray Foam Insulation Crossfield: Common Questions

Why does the age of the house change the answer so much? Because roughly half the town predates 1991 and half does not, and those two stocks have almost nothing in common. The older one lacks insulation and air sealing everywhere; the newer one lacks air sealing in a few places only.

Does the open prairie location really matter? Yes. Air leakage is pressure driven, and with nothing upwind to slow the wind there is more pressure across the wall here than on a sheltered lot.

Is closed-cell always the right choice? Not always. It belongs on concrete, on steel and on anything below grade, at about R-6 to R-7 per inch. Open-cell at about R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch is the better answer for interior walls and for sound.

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Crossfield? It follows the sprayed area and the depth needed to reach the target R-value, so the scope is the number. On a newer Crossfield house the right scope is often a small fraction of the house, which is the main reason two quotes here can look nothing alike.

Who does spray foam insulation in Crossfield? We do, directly. We come and look at the building, write the scope from what is actually there, schedule the work and stand behind it.
