About 66% of homes in Banff were built before 1991, and in a town whose boundary is fixed by legislation that share is not going to fall. Spray foam insulation in Banff is retrofit work almost without exception. We are working around framing that is already standing, inside a footprint nobody is allowed to enlarge, and usually while somebody is living in the building or running a business out of it.

A town that renovates instead of expanding

Most Alberta insulation demand follows new subdivisions. Here there are none to follow. The townsite sits inside a national park, the lots are held on lease from the Crown rather than owned outright, and both the land area and the commercial floor space are capped. The consequence for our trade is specific: nobody calls us to spray open walls on a lot that was a field last year. They call us about a building that has stood through sixty or eighty winters and has stopped being comfortable.

What that stock is actually made of

Small wood-framed houses and chalets on tight lots, many with steep roofs built to shed snow and finished inside as open cathedral ceilings over exposed beams. Crawl spaces rather than full basements under a good share of the older ones. Two-by-four exterior walls that cannot be made deeper without losing floor area in a house that has none to spare. Additions added across different decades, so the envelope is a patchwork of standards rather than one assembly.

The climate the envelope has to survive

Over a kilometre above sea level, the cold is deep and it holds. Snow lands on a roof in November and is still there in March, which is a sustained load and a standing reservoir of water. At this elevation the winter sun is strong enough to melt the top of that snowpack on a day the air never rises above freezing, so the surface thaws and refreezes daily while the building below stays cold. That cycle, not the average temperature, is what finds the weak detail.

Air sealing is the half most quotes skip

Insulation slows heat moving through a material. It does nothing about air moving around it, and air movement is what makes an old mountain house feel cold next to a warm thermostat. Closed-cell foam is around R-6 to R-7 per inch and becomes a vapour barrier at roughly two inches, so it does both jobs in one pass where it is applied. The value of that on this stock is not the R-value number. It is that the foam bonds to irregular, aged, out-of-plumb framing that no cut-to-size product fits.

How we scope a Banff building

We look at the building, not a description of it. That means finding where the air is actually leaving, deciding which surface returns the most for the money, and being straight about what is not worth doing. We quote the job, schedule it, and stand behind it. On an occupied hotel or a rented house the schedule matters as much as the scope, so we plan around the shoulder season when the building is quietest.

Spray Foam Insulation Banff: Common Questions

Why is retrofit different from a new build here? Because there is no new build to speak of. The framing is standing, the finishes are in, and access is the constraint that sets the scope.

Our house has a new furnace and it still feels cold. A furnace answers heat loss. It does nothing about air moving through the shell, and in this stock that is usually the complaint.

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Banff? It is priced per board foot for the sprayed area, so the number follows surface area and target depth. What moves it on a Banff building is access, staging on a narrow street, and whether finishes have to come off first.

Who does spray foam insulation in Banff? We do the work ourselves. Tell us which room is uncomfortable and when, and that usually points at the surface before we arrive.
