Wall spray foam insulation in Crossfield divides along the same line everything else in this town does. About 46% of local homes were built before 1991, and in that group the wall is the problem. In the newer group the wall is usually the one assembly that is genuinely fine, and the money belongs elsewhere. Getting that distinction right before anybody opens a wall is most of the value we add.

What an older Crossfield wall actually is

Behind the siding on a house from the townsite grid there is commonly board sheathing, sometimes laid diagonally, with gaps between the boards that have opened as the lumber dried. There may be building paper over it and there may not. Inside that is a shallow stud cavity with batt or loose fill, and on the warm side either nothing or a paint film doing duty as a vapour retarder. That assembly has no continuous air barrier at any layer. It works by being thick enough and by the wind not being very strong, and on a lot with open quarter sections upwind the second of those does not hold.

Wind drives through a cavity, not just against it

A wall with a leaky outer layer and a leaky inner layer does not simply lose heat by conduction. Air enters through the sheathing gaps, moves through the insulation and exits somewhere inside or at the top plate, and in doing so it carries the heat out of material that is otherwise working correctly. Batt in a ventilated cavity performs far below its label, and that gap between label and reality widens exactly as the wind rises. This is why owners of these houses describe the walls as cold rather than the rooms, and why they feel it most on the windward side.

Reaching the cavity is the real decision

Foam has to be sprayed onto something, which means the cavity has to be open. There are three honest routes. The interior finish comes off, which is the right answer when the room is being renovated anyway and gives the best result because the cavity can be filled and the framing sealed. The siding comes off and the wall is treated from outside, which suits a house due for new cladding and allows continuous exterior work. Or the wall is left alone and the budget goes to the attic, the rim joist and the basement, which on many Crossfield houses returns more comfort per dollar than the wall would. We will say which of the three the building is asking for.

Open-cell and closed-cell do different jobs in a wall

In an above-grade stud cavity with a drying path to the outside, open-cell at about R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch fills the full depth, seals the cavity and lets the assembly dry inward if it ever gets wet. Closed-cell at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch puts more R into a shallow cavity and becomes a vapour barrier at about two inches, which is right in some assemblies and wrong in others depending on what is already on the warm side. An older wall that already has poly behind the drywall is a different calculation from one that has nothing. That is read off the building.

Wall Spray Foam Insulation Crossfield: Common Questions

Can the walls be done without opening them? Not with sprayed foam. It is applied wet to an open surface. Injected products exist and they are a different material with different results, and we will tell you plainly which one your wall suits.

Why do the walls feel cold when there is insulation in them? Because air is moving through the cavity. Batt slows heat but does nothing to stop air, and a wall with gapped board sheathing on an exposed lot has plenty of air moving through it.

Is it worth doing the walls on a newer house in town? Rarely. Post-2000 walls here are generally adequate, and the faults in those houses are at the garage ceiling, the cantilevers and the joist ends instead.

How much does wall spray foam insulation cost in Crossfield? The foam prices as area times depth, but on walls the access dominates: removing and replacing finish or cladding is usually the larger half. That is why wall work is best done alongside a renovation or a re-side.

How do I choose a wall spray foam contractor in Crossfield? Ask what they would do instead if the walls stayed shut. A contractor who has an answer to that has actually weighed the building rather than sold the biggest item in it.
