Walls in a mountain valley are not loaded evenly. The Bow Valley funnels air along its length, so a Canmore house has a face that takes sustained wind and a face that is sheltered, and it has a south elevation that bakes in high-altitude sun while the north elevation stays in shadow for months. Four walls, four different sets of conditions, and a quote that treats them as one surface is quoting a prairie house.

Wind does not just chill a wall, it pumps it

A steady wind pressurises the face it hits and puts the opposite face under suction. Air is then driven through the building from one side to the other continuously, rather than drifting in and out the way it does on a calm site. Every unsealed gap in the windward wall becomes a supply vent and every gap in the leeward wall becomes an exhaust. That is why one room in a Canmore house is always the cold one, why its wall feels cold even when the insulation is intact, and why sealing that face does more than adding depth anywhere in the building.

The sun side has its own problem

At this altitude the solar load on a south or west wall in winter is strong enough to warm the cladding well above freezing in the afternoon while the air stays below it. Then the sun drops behind the ridge and the surface plunges. That is a freeze-thaw cycle running daily rather than seasonally, and anything with water in it - stucco, mortar, wet sheathing - is being worked on every clear day. Keeping liquid water and warm indoor moisture out of that assembly is the point of the exercise, and that is an air and vapour control question before it is an insulation question.

What the stock gives you to work with

The newer two thirds of the town is conventional framing, mostly 2x6, and the honest answer there is that the cavity is already insulated. The gain comes from sealing the corners, the window and door openings, the junction at the floor levels and the wall-to-roof transition. The mine-era cottages are the opposite case: shallow framing, little or no insulation, and sheathing you cannot rely on. On those, closed-cell at about R-6 to R-7 per inch buys more R out of a thin cavity than anything else and seals the leaks in the same pass.

Opening a wall, or not

If the interior finish is coming off anyway - a kitchen, a bathroom, a full renovation of an older cottage - the cavity is open and the decision is easy. If it is not, drill-and-fill with foam through small openings is possible but it is a different operation with different limits, and we will tell you which of the two we think your wall needs rather than quoting the one that is easier to sell. On an attached unit in a townhouse row there is a third question: which walls are actually yours.

Where exterior work is the better answer

Sometimes the right move is not inside the cavity at all. If siding is being replaced, a continuous layer outboard of the sheathing breaks the thermal bridge at every stud and takes care of the sun-side cycling at the same time. That is a bigger project and it belongs in a renovation plan, not a retrofit quote. We would rather say so than spray a cavity and watch the studs keep conducting.

Wall Spray Foam Insulation Canmore: Common Questions

Why is only one room cold? It is usually on the wall that takes the wind. Pressure drives air through that face continuously, and insulation does not stop air movement - air sealing does.

Our walls already have insulation. Is there anything to gain? Yes, at the joints. Corners, window openings, the band at each floor level and the wall-to-roof junction are where a framed wall actually loses air.

Can you insulate without taking the drywall off? Sometimes, through small openings. It has real limits and we will say which method your wall suits.

How much does wall spray foam insulation cost in Canmore? Priced per board foot of sprayed area, so the number follows wall area and target depth. Whether the cavity is already open is the biggest single variable.

How do I get a wall spray foam insulation quote in Canmore? Name the cold room and the elevation it faces, and say whether anything is being renovated. That is enough to decide what we come to look at.
