About 66 percent of Edson's homes were built before 1991, making it one of the older housing stocks in the province, and it sits in the foothills where winters are colder and windier than on the open plains. Wall spray foam insulation in Edson is retrofit work in most cases, and the exposure makes the losses from an underperforming wall more expensive than the same wall further east.

Wind makes air leakage cost more

Air leakage through a wall is driven by pressure difference, and wind supplies it. The same set of gaps that leaks slowly on a calm day moves a great deal more air on an exposed, windy one. That is why two houses with identical insulation can perform very differently, and why sealing the assembly matters as much as filling it.

Nominal R is not what you get

A batt marked R-14 gives that through the batt and much less through the studs beside it, since wood conducts heat far better than insulation does. Add air movement through the assembly and the effective performance drops further. Spray foam fills the cavity completely and seals the air paths in the same pass, which improves both halves at once.

Three ways foam is used in a wall

Full-cavity open cell fills the stud bay and air seals it. Flash-and-batt puts a layer of closed cell against the sheathing for air and vapour control and completes the fill with batt, which is often the best value in a cold climate. Exterior continuous insulation goes outside the studs and is the only approach that interrupts thermal bridging outright.

The access problem in an older town

Foam bonds to the substrate, so a finished wall cannot be sprayed. In a town where two thirds of the houses are decades old, that means most wall work happens during a renovation or a re-side. If the siding is coming off, that is when exterior continuous insulation becomes affordable, and it is the approach that does most for a cold, exposed house.

What to do if no wall is opening

Spend the money where it is reachable. Attics, rim joists and crawl spaces are accessible now, usually leak more than the walls do, and cost far less to address. We would rather point you at those than sell you a wall job that cannot be executed properly.

Wall Spray Foam Insulation Edson: Common Questions

Will this help with how drafty the house feels? Air sealing is what changes that feeling, and foam does it as it insulates - in the assemblies we can actually reach.

Can you inject it into the existing walls? Not spray foam. It needs an open cavity because it bonds to what it is sprayed against.

Is exterior insulation worth it? During a re-side, often yes. It is the only method that stops heat conducting straight through the studs.
