About 54 percent of St. Albert homes were built before 1991, which places the city between the older core communities and the newer commuter towns. Wall spray foam insulation in St. Albert is mostly a renovation decision, and the rooms that prompt the call are usually the same two in every house.

The garage wall and the room above it

The wall between a house and an attached garage, and the bonus room sitting over that garage, are the assemblies people complain about. Both face an unheated space rather than the outdoors, both tend to be built to a lower standard as a result, and both are noticeably colder than the rest of the house. When either is opened during a renovation, they are the best value wall work in the building.

A fifth of the wall is not insulated at all

A batt marked R-14 gives that through the batt and much less through the studs beside it, because wood conducts heat far more readily than insulation. Studs are roughly a fifth of the wall. Once air leakage is included, the assembly performs below its label. Foam fills the cavity completely and seals the leakage paths in the same pass.

Re-cladding is the moment the third option exists

Two of the three approaches are available whenever a St. Albert wall is open from inside: full-cavity open cell, which fills the stud bay and air seals it, and flash-and-batt, which puts closed cell against the sheathing for air and vapour control and completes the fill with batt. The third is not. Exterior continuous insulation sits outside the studs and is the only approach that interrupts thermal bridging, and it is only practical while the cladding is off. On a house due for new siding that window opens roughly once in a generation.

Access is still the deciding factor

Spray foam bonds to the substrate, so the cavity must be open. Finished walls cannot be sprayed. In practice that means wall work happens during a renovation, a re-side, or where a wall is already opened. If nothing is opening, the attic and rim joist are reachable today and usually give more back per dollar.

Older areas and newer ones

In Akinsdale and Woodlands the stock is older and the retrofit constraint applies most. In Erin Ridge, Jensen Lakes and Kingswood the houses are newer, and the useful conversation is usually about the garage-adjacent assemblies rather than the exterior walls generally.

Renovation is the moment the wall is available

A wall is only genuinely accessible while it is open, and on an older house that happens during a renovation and at almost no other time. Where a room is being taken back to the studs for other reasons, the marginal cost of treating the wall properly at that moment is far lower than doing it as its own project later. It is worth raising with whoever is running the renovation early, because the sequence matters more than the decision does.

Wall Spray Foam Insulation St. Albert: Common Questions

Why is the bonus room always cold? Because its floor and walls face an unheated garage and are usually built as though they did not. Treating that assembly is the fix.

Can you spray our existing exterior walls? Only where the cavity is opened. Foam bonds to the substrate, so there is no spraying through drywall.

Is exterior insulation an option? During a re-side, yes, and it is the only way to interrupt thermal bridging through the studs.
