About 52 percent of Calgary homes were built before 1991, which puts the city almost exactly on the line between retrofit and new-build work. Wall spray foam insulation in Calgary is therefore two different conversations depending on which side of that line your house sits, and the honest answer to "should we do our walls" changes completely between them.

Nominal R and effective R are not the same number

A batt marked R-14 gives you R-14 through the batt and considerably less through the studs beside it, because wood conducts heat far better than insulation does. Those studs are typically around a fifth of the wall area. The number that matters is the effective R of the whole assembly, not the figure printed on the packaging, and air leakage degrades it further. Foam addresses both parts of that: it fills the cavity completely and it seals the air paths at the same time.

The three ways foam gets used in a wall

Full-cavity open cell fills the stud bay and air seals it. Flash-and-batt puts a layer of closed cell against the sheathing for its air and vapour control, then fills the rest with batt, which is often the best value in a cold climate. Exterior continuous insulation goes outside the studs entirely and is the only approach that actually interrupts thermal bridging, because nothing conducts straight through.

What actually leaks in a Calgary wall

Rarely the middle of the cavity. It is the top and bottom plates, the joints around windows and doors, electrical and plumbing penetrations, and the junction where the wall meets the floor system. A wall can be full of insulation and still leak badly, which is why air sealing and insulating in one operation is worth more than the R-value alone suggests.

Retrofit walls are the harder problem, and worth being blunt about

Foam bonds to the substrate, so a finished wall cannot simply be sprayed. The cavity has to be open. That means the realistic retrofit moments are a renovation, a re-side, or a wall already opened for other reasons. If a contractor offers to spray your existing finished walls without opening them, ask exactly how, because the standard answer is that it is not how this product works.

New construction and infill

Calgary builds a great deal of infill, and a wall assembly is only cheap to get right once. During framing the cavity is open, nothing has to be removed, and the decision costs a fraction of what the same performance costs later. If you are building, that is the moment to specify the assembly rather than to inherit whatever is standard.

Wall Spray Foam Insulation Calgary: Common Questions

Can you spray my existing walls without tearing them apart? Not with spray foam. It bonds to the substrate and needs an open cavity. Anyone promising otherwise is describing a different product.

Is flash-and-batt worth it over full foam? Frequently, in this climate. You get the air and vapour control where it matters and spend less on the fill behind it.

Does foam in the walls stop drafts? It stops the ones running through the assemblies it fills. Windows, doors and the floor junction have their own paths, and they need addressing too.

After the foam: the interior finish

Once the foam is in and trimmed, the assembly needs its interior finish, and on an occupied space that finish is also the code-required thermal barrier over the foam. We work alongside drywall finishing in Calgary, an independent drywall contractor, so the two stages are not left to collide on site.
