Still from Dustin's 2026-08-28 job video

With about 52% of Athabasca homes built before 1991, wall spray foam insulation here is nearly always a retrofit into a wall somebody else framed, and the single most important thing about a wall retrofit is timing. A wall can be worked on properly from the outside roughly once in the life of the cladding. If the siding is coming off anyway, that is the moment. If it is not, the job is a different and more limited one, and it is better to say so than to pretend otherwise.

What a re-side makes possible that nothing else does

With the cladding off, the exterior sheathing is exposed and every penetration through it can be sealed: around windows, at the band where the floor framing sits, at the corners, where services enter. A continuous layer can be established on the outside of the structure, which is the only place an insulating layer is genuinely continuous, because it passes over the studs instead of stopping at each one. Thermal bridging through framing is a real fraction of the loss on a 2x4 wall and the outside is the only face where it can be addressed without gutting the house.

Working from the inside, and being straight about the limit

Most walls we are asked about are not being re-sided. From the inside, after the drywall comes off, each stud bay is reachable and can be sprayed, which seals the bay, stops air moving within the wall and gives a usefully higher R-value per inch than what was in there. What it cannot do is cover the studs. The framing remains a path through the assembly, so the finished wall performs better than it did and not as well as the same depth would on the outside. That is a fair trade for a wall that is open for other reasons. It is a poor reason to open a wall that is otherwise fine.

A 2x4 cavity is a budget, not a target

Depth is capped by the framing, and on a lot of local stock that framing is 2x4. Closed-cell at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch puts considerably more R in that cavity than batt does, and it becomes a vapour barrier itself at about two inches, which changes how the rest of the assembly should be detailed. Open-cell at about R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch fills an irregular bay more forgivingly and does more for sound. In a shallow exterior wall on the boreal edge the closed-cell case is usually the stronger one.

What is actually in the wall is a question, not an assumption

This town filled in over a century rather than in one decade, so the wall we open is genuinely unknown until we open it. Plank sheathing with building paper. Batt with a poly sheet. Batt with nothing. Blown-in fill that has settled and left the top of the bay empty. Shavings, occasionally, in the oldest houses. Each of those wants a different approach and some of them have to come out first. One small opening at the start of a job answers more than an hour of discussion.

One elevation at a time is a legitimate plan

Owners often assume a wall job means every wall. It does not have to. If one elevation takes the weather and the room behind it is the one being complained about, doing that elevation during a re-side of that face is a sensible, bounded project. A long heating season makes even a partial improvement count, because whatever is fixed is working for eight months rather than four.

Where the wall meets other things

Most of the loss at a wall is not in the middle of it. It is at the top and bottom plates, around the window openings, at the corner, and at the band where one storey sits on the next. Those are joints rather than areas, foam is at its best in joints, and a quote that measures only square footage has priced the area and not the problem.

We take care of the work

On wall spray foam insulation Athabasca, the people who quote the work are the people who do it. We insulate it ourselves and we answer for the result.

Wall Spray Foam Insulation Athabasca: Common Questions

Should we open our walls to insulate them? Not on their own. Do it when the walls are already open for a renovation, or do it from outside when the siding is being replaced.

Is outside or inside better? Outside, clearly, because the layer is continuous over the framing. Inside is the practical option when the cladding is staying on.

What if the wall is only 2x4? Then depth is limited and material per inch matters more. Closed-cell puts the most R into a shallow cavity and seals it at the same time.

How much does wall spray foam insulation cost in Athabasca? It follows wall area and the thickness the cavity allows, with the real variable being what has to be removed and put back. During a re-side the access is already paid for by the other trade.

How do I choose a wall spray foam contractor in Athabasca? Ask what they will do at the window openings and the floor band. If the answer is only about square footage, they are quoting the field of the wall and not the joints.
