Wall spray foam insulation in Barrhead is the job we are least likely to recommend on its own and the one with the most to gain when the timing is right. With about 74% of the local housing built before 1991, there are a great many 2x4 walls in this town with very little in them — and opening a wall purely to insulate it is rarely the best use of the same money, while insulating a wall that is already open is close to free by comparison.
The timing decides it, not the method
There are three moments when a wall job makes sense. The siding is coming off anyway, for age or hail or a change of cladding. A room is being gutted for a renovation. Or there is a specific wall causing a specific problem — a bedroom on the exposed corner, the back wall of a bungalow, a room over an addition.
Outside those three, the honest advice is to spend the money on the ceiling plane, the rim joist and the basement, and keep the walls for the day the cladding comes off. We say that to people who phoned us about walls, and we would rather say it than take the job.
What a re-side makes possible
With the cladding off, the whole exterior is available, and that unlocks something no interior approach can match: a continuous layer on the outside of the sheathing, over the framing, the plates, the rim and the corners together. Thermal bridging through the studs disappears because the layer does not stop at them. The air barrier is on one plane with no outlets, stringers or pipes puncturing it. And nobody has to move out of a bedroom.
That is the version of a wall job worth planning for, and it means a conversation with whoever is doing the siding before anything is ordered, because the thickness changes the window and door details and the trim.
The band at the bottom, and what is in the cavity
Two things about walls specifically here. The first is the base. In a yard where nothing blows the snow clear, the bottom foot or two of every exterior wall spends the winter behind a drift and spring soaked while it melts in place. That band is where we find the damaged sheathing, the rotted bottom plate and the mouse runs, and on a re-side it should be inspected and repaired before anything goes on — the insulation is not the repair.
The second is that nobody knows what is in these walls until one is opened. On a house of this era it could be nothing, it could be two inches of fibreglass stapled in, it could be a wood-fibre board, and in the renovated ones there may be a poly sheet somewhere unhelpful. That is a question to answer rather than an assumption to price, which is why we open a small area before quoting a whole elevation.
Working from the inside, and the vapour question
Where the interior is coming off instead, closed-cell against the back of the sheathing in a 2x4 cavity gives a sealed assembly and a genuine number out of three and a half inches, which fibrous material cannot match in that depth. The limit to be straight about is that the studs still bridge through, so the whole-wall performance is lower than the cavity figure — that is arithmetic, not a defect, and anyone quoting the cavity number as the wall number is overstating it.
As for whether a poly sheet still goes over the top: once there is sufficient closed-cell against the sheathing, the foam is the vapour control, and adding a second barrier on the warm side creates a space between two barriers that nothing can dry into. That is a detail to agree before the drywall goes up, not after.

Wall Spray Foam Insulation Barrhead: Common Questions
Is it worth opening the walls just to insulate them? Usually not. The ceiling plane, the rim joist and the basement give more back for the same money. Walls are for when the siding or the interior is coming off anyway.
Can foam be injected without opening the wall? Sprayed foam cannot be. It expands and has to be applied to an open surface, so a wall job means access from one side or the other.
We are re-siding next summer. Then that is the moment, and it is worth deciding now, because exterior insulation changes the window, door and trim details the siding contractor is planning.
Do we still need a poly vapour barrier over the foam? Not where there is enough closed-cell against the sheathing — the foam is already doing it, and a second barrier traps anything between them.
How much does wall spray foam insulation cost in Barrhead? Sprayed area prices by the board foot at the depth the cavity or the exterior detail allows, with removal, repairs at the wall base and reinstatement as separate lines. On a re-side the other trades' scope matters as much as ours.
How do I choose a wall spray foam contractor in Barrhead? Ask them to open a small area and tell you what is in the wall before they price the whole elevation. A quote written without that is a quote written on a guess.
