Wall spray foam insulation in Redcliff is the hardest retrofit in the house and the one with the narrowest window of opportunity. About 62% of local homes were built before 1991, and in the older part of that stock the walls are shallow, often empty, and clad in something that nobody is going to take off casually. In a town whose early industry worked clay and brick, a fair number of those walls are masonry-faced, and that single fact removes the easiest version of the job.

Which side can you work from

Every wall retrofit comes down to this question, and in Redcliff the answer is usually the inside.

Working from the outside means removing the cladding, insulating or sheathing, and re-cladding. On a house with vinyl or old siding that is coming off anyway, it is the best version of the job: the insulation is continuous, nothing inside is disturbed, and the thermal bridge at every stud can be covered. On a brick-faced wall it is not realistic. The brick is structural or at least load-sharing, it is the reason the house looks the way it does, and taking it down and rebuilding it costs several times the insulation. The same goes for an older stucco wall in sound condition.

So the inside is the route, which means the plaster or drywall has to come off. That is why this is renovation work, and why our honest advice to most homeowners is to wait until a room is being redone and then do the walls as part of it. Opening a wall purely to insulate it rarely adds up. Opening one that is already open almost always does.

What we find in an old Redcliff wall

Shallow framing, often with less depth than modern lumber. Board sheathing with gaps between the boards. Frequently no building paper, or paper that has long since stopped working. Nothing in the cavity at all, or something organic that has settled into the bottom third of it. Framing that is not plumb and not evenly spaced, and that has been cut into repeatedly for wiring.

That is a wall where cut-to-size insulation performs badly, because every cavity is a different width and nothing fits. Foam is applied, so the irregularity stops mattering, and it seals the gaps in the board sheathing at the same time, which is where a large share of the air leakage in a house like this actually is.

Depth, product and the thing to get right

In a shallow cavity the performance per inch decides what is achievable. Closed-cell at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch delivers a usable number in the depth available, is the air barrier, and at around two inches is the vapour control, which matters a great deal in a wall with no functioning paper behind the cladding. The rule to respect is that the vapour control has to end up on the warm side of the assembly, which is why the foam is applied against the sheathing and not left in the middle of the cavity.

Open-cell belongs in interior partitions and where sound is the aim, not against the back of an exterior wall this shallow.

Wall Spray Foam Insulation Redcliff: Common Questions

Can you inject foam into our walls without opening them? We do not. Injection into a closed cavity cannot be verified, and in a wall with irregular framing and no paper behind the cladding, unverified coverage is exactly the risk.

Our house is brick. Is there an outside option? Realistically no. The brick stays, so the work happens from inside when a room is being renovated.

Should we insulate the walls or spend elsewhere? Elsewhere first, unless the walls are already being opened. The rim joist, the ceiling plane and the basement give more for less on this stock.

How much does wall spray foam insulation cost in Redcliff? Priced per board foot of sprayed area at the depth available, so wall area sets the base. The removal and replacement of the interior finish is the larger part of the overall project and it sits outside the spray scope.

How do I choose a wall spray foam contractor in Redcliff? Ask which side they intend to work from and why. If they offer to inject a closed wall on an old house, ask how coverage will be confirmed.
