Red Deer is split almost exactly down the middle - close to half its homes were built before 1991 and half after. Wall spray foam insulation in Red Deer is consequently two different jobs in one city, and which one you have depends entirely on the age of the house and whether anything is being opened up.
The older half: access is the constraint
Foam bonds to the substrate, so the stud cavity has to be open. A finished wall cannot be sprayed. In the older neighbourhoods that ties wall work to renovations and re-sides. Outside those moments the attic, rim joist and crawl space are reachable now, usually leak more, and cost less - which is where we would send the first money.
The newer half: the cheap moment
In newer areas and in anything being built, the cavity is already open during framing. Nothing has to be removed and there is no access problem, so a better assembly costs a fraction of what the same performance costs as a retrofit. If a house is going up, that is when the wall assembly should be decided deliberately rather than inherited.
What the studs and the seams give back
A batt marked R-14 delivers that through the batt and considerably less through the studs beside it, because wood conducts heat far more readily than insulation. Studs are roughly a fifth of a wall's area, and air leakage lowers the effective figure further. Foam fills the cavity completely and seals the air paths at the same time, which is why it improves both halves of the problem rather than just one.
Three ways to build the wall in central Alberta
Full-cavity open cell fills the bay and air seals it. Flash-and-batt puts closed cell against the sheathing for air and vapour control and fills the rest with batt, which is often the best value in central Alberta. Exterior continuous insulation goes outside the studs and is the only method that interrupts thermal bridging, because nothing conducts straight through the framing.
What a wall actually leaks through
Top and bottom plates, around window and door openings, electrical and plumbing penetrations, and the junction where the wall meets the floor system. A wall completely full of insulation can still leak badly at those points, which is the argument for sealing and insulating in one operation.
What decides the product in a wall
The depth available decides more than preference does. A standard cavity offers a fixed number of inches, so reaching a target inside it usually requires the denser foam that delivers more per inch, while a deeper assembly opens up cheaper options.
Wall Spray Foam Insulation Red Deer: Common Questions
Our house is from the eighties - what should we do first? Almost certainly the attic and rim joist, unless a wall is being opened for other reasons.
We are building - full foam or flash-and-batt? Flash-and-batt is often the better value in this climate, and we will say so rather than quote the larger job by default.
Can foam go into finished walls? No. It bonds to the substrate and needs an open cavity.
