Wall spray foam insulation in Devon is governed by the depth of the framing, and on the original townsite houses that depth is shallow. Those walls were built in an era when a nominal two-by-four stud wall was the standard residential assembly, and no amount of product selection changes the fact that the cavity is what it is. What foam changes in a wall of that depth is not the number on the paperwork. It is the air.

The cavity caps the R-value, so stop chasing it

Fill a shallow cavity with the best material available and the assembly is still limited by its thickness. Closed-cell runs about R-6 to R-7 per inch, which in a shallow stud bay is a meaningful improvement over empty or over settled fibre, but it is not a modern wall and nobody should quote it as one. Pretending otherwise sets an owner up to be disappointed by a bill that was spent correctly.

What is actually missing behind the cladding

On houses of this vintage there is usually no continuous air barrier anywhere in the wall. There may be board sheathing with gaps between the boards, there may be building paper in poor condition, and there may be nothing but cladding over the studs. Wind pressure drives outdoor air straight into the cavity, through whatever insulation is there, and out again somewhere else. That is why a wall with insulation in it can still feel cold to the hand and why a room on the windward side of the house never matches the rest.

Foam in that cavity, adhered to the back of the sheathing and to the sides of the studs, stops that movement. The comfort change comes from the air, not from the R-value.

Two honest routes, and they cost different amounts

If the interior finish is coming off anyway — a kitchen, a bathroom, a full renovation of one of the original houses — the wall is open, every bay can be sprayed, the framing can be inspected, and any wiring or plumbing problem gets found while it is cheap. That is the thorough version and it only makes sense when demolition was already happening.

If the walls are staying closed, injection foam through small holes from inside or outside is the alternative, and it is a genuinely different product with a genuinely different result. It fills, it reduces air movement, and it cannot seal around every obstruction the way an open-cavity spray can. We will tell you which one we are quoting and why.

Where a wall job earns its keep in this town

The windward elevations, the walls of rooms added on later, and the walls of the small rear porches and mudrooms that were built onto a lot of these houses after the fact. Those additions were frequently framed with less care than the original house and are often the coldest rooms in it.

The brick and the stucco question

Where the cladding is masonry or stucco, drilling from outside is a specialist repair as much as an insulation job, and the patching is part of the quote rather than an afterthought. On a planned townsite where the elevations repeat, a bad patch is visible from the street.

Wall Spray Foam Insulation Devon: Common Questions

Can we get a modern R-value out of these walls? Not without furring out or re-cladding. The cavity depth is the limit, and the honest gain is in stopping air movement rather than in the number.

Is injection as good as spraying an open wall? It is not the same thing. It fills and it slows air, but an open cavity sprayed properly seals around everything in the bay. Where the finish is coming off anyway, take the open route.

Which walls first? The ones on the windward side and any later addition. Rooms added to these houses after the fact are usually framed and sealed worse than the original.

How much does wall spray foam insulation cost in Devon? Priced per board foot of cavity sprayed, so wall area and framing depth set the quantity. Whether the wall is open already is the single biggest swing in the number.

How do I choose a wall spray foam contractor in Devon? Ask them to say plainly what R-value the finished wall will reach, and who patches the cladding. Vague answers on either point are the warning.
