What Spray Foam Insulation Costs in Alberta

The honest answer to "what does spray foam cost?" is a question back: how many board feet, which foam, and how hard is the space to reach? Everything else online is an average that may have nothing to do with your building. Here's how the number is actually built, so you can read any quote you're handed.

The unit that matters: the board foot

Installers price in board feet - one square foot covered to one inch of thickness. A 1,000 sq ft attic sprayed to 6 inches isn't 1,000 units of anything; it's 6,000 board feet. Once you think in board feet, the rest of the estimate stops being mysterious:

  • Foam type. Closed-cell costs more per board foot than open-cell because it's denser and does more (higher R, vapour barrier, rigidity). Open-cell stretches a budget where its lower R and permeability are acceptable.
  • Target R-value -> thickness. Hitting attic R-38 takes roughly 6" of closed-cell or 11" of open-cell. More inches, more board feet, more cost.
  • Access and prep. Open new walls are cheap to spray; tight crawlspaces, cut-in retrofits and masking around finished space add labour.

Why we won't post a flat price

A single sticker price would be either useless or misleading, because the same brand of foam lands at a very different total on a walk-out basement versus a vaulted ceiling versus a Quonset. What we can give you is a grounded estimate and then a real number:

  1. Run the board-foot calculator - enter area and thickness, get an estimated quantity.
  2. Request a quote - a vetted local installer confirms the spec and price on your actual space.

Where the money comes back

Spray foam usually costs more up front than batt or blown-in, and the return is the air-seal: in an Alberta winter, the leaks you close are the bills you stop paying. Closed-cell in a basement or rim joist also controls the condensation that quietly rots and moulds an under-insulated wall - a repair cost that never shows up on the insulation invoice.
