Not every ceiling is an attic. Between-floor ceilings, cathedral and vaulted ceilings, and ceilings over unconditioned space each have a job batt handles poorly - and each is a good fit for spray foam.
Where ceiling foam earns its place
- Cathedral and vaulted ceilings: little room for deep batt and a high risk of condensation; closed-cell on the underside of the deck seals and insulates in the tight space available.
- Ceilings over unheated space (a garage, a porch, an unheated addition): foam stops the cold coming up into the room above.
- Between-floor ceilings: open-cell adds real sound separation between storeys.
Matching the foam
Closed-cell where moisture or a tight cavity rules (vaults, over-garage); open-cell where the goal is quiet between floors. A good installer specs to the assembly, not a default.
