Spray foam is the best tool for many jobs - and the wrong one for some. An honest contractor will tell you when to spend your money elsewhere, so here's where foam isn't the right call.
Where another option often wins
- Big, open, accessible attics on a tight budget - blown-in (ideally over a foam air-seal at the ceiling plane) can deliver most of the benefit for less than filling the whole depth with foam.
- Simple interior walls where sound and cost lead - open-cell or even batt may be the sensible spend, not premium closed-cell.
- Over unresolved problems - never foam over active moisture, or over suspected asbestos without proper assessment and abatement first.
Where foam is worth every dollar
Basements, rim joists, crawlspaces, metal buildings, and any air-sealing job in a cold, windy climate - the places its air-seal and moisture control are irreplaceable.
