Seal the penetrations between house and attic - top plates, plumbing stack, bathroom fan, ceiling lights, the hatch - before adding any depth. Escaping household air carries the heat and the moisture; insulation slows heat but does not stop air. On a house of this age there are usually more of those openings than anyone expects.
Keep the eaves clear
Attics from this era rarely have baffles. New depth pushed into the eave blocks the soffit vents and turns a heat-loss problem into a moisture one, so baffles go in as part of the work rather than as an extra.
