A town where about 76% of the housing predates 1991 does not have many bonus rooms in the modern sense. What it has instead is the room that plays the same part: the finished half-storey under the roof, or a room built over a garage long after the garage went up. Both behave the same way and both get the same complaint.
The half-storey is a room inside a roof
In the older houses here the upstairs is a finished space carved out of the roof structure. It has short knee walls at the sides, a sloped ceiling above them, and a flat section in the middle. Behind each knee wall is a triangular void running the length of the house, and in the original construction those voids were open to the roof space at the top and often to the floor structure at the bottom. The room is therefore surrounded on several sides by unconditioned air that moves freely.
Where the insulation actually stops
The knee wall usually has a batt in it with nothing holding it in place on the cold side, so air in the triangle washes straight through the fibre. The sloped section has whatever fitted between the rafters, which on original framing is not much. The floor at the outer edge of the room sits over the same triangle. Add it up and the room has a thin, air-washed boundary on three planes at once, which is why it is always the first room to be too cold and the first to be too hot.
The room over the garage version
Where somebody built a room above an attached garage, the floor of that room has outdoor-temperature air underneath it rather than heated house. If the bays were insulated at all it was with batt pushed up between the joists, which sags away from the subfloor and leaves a gap for air to move in. The complaint reported is a cold floor and a room that never holds temperature, and the cause is under the floor rather than in the ceiling.
Prairie summer makes it the hottest room too
Bow Island takes very long, very bright summer days. A room enclosed by roof surfaces on three sides with little depth in the assembly gets the full afternoon load and nothing to buffer it. By evening the sloped ceiling is radiating into the room and a window unit struggles because the heat keeps arriving. Owners usually ask about the winter and are more pleased about the summer afterwards, because the same sealed, continuous boundary works in both directions.
What a proper fix involves
The boundary has to become continuous and it has to be sealed on the cold side. Closed-cell foam on the back of the knee walls and onto the floor sheathing in the triangle, foam in the sloped rafter bays, and the floor bays over the garage sprayed solid against the subfloor. Each knee-wall triangle gets closed off from the roof space above it. Done that way the room has a single uninterrupted envelope rather than four partial ones. It is more work than topping up a batt and it is the only version that changes how the room behaves.
Doing it without rebuilding the room
Access is the whole question. The triangles can often be reached through a small opening in the knee wall rather than by demolishing it. A room over a garage can almost always be done from the garage ceiling, which means nobody touches the finished room at all. Where the sloped ceiling itself has to be opened, we would rather say so than pretend there is a shortcut.

Bonus Room Spray Foam Insulation Bow Island: Common Questions
What is the triangle behind the knee wall? The void between the sloped roof and the floor of the room. It is outdoor-temperature space on the other side of your wall, and in original construction it is usually connected to the roof space above.
Why does more insulation in the knee wall not help? Because air in the triangle washes through unfaced fibre. The cold side has to be sealed before depth means anything.
Can the floor over the garage be done from underneath? Usually yes, by removing the garage ceiling. That keeps the work out of the finished room entirely.
How much does bonus room spray foam insulation cost in Bow Island? The sprayed area and thickness set the foam, and access sets the rest. Reaching the triangles through small openings is far cheaper than opening up a finished sloped ceiling.
How do I choose a bonus room spray foam contractor in Bow Island? Ask how many separate planes they intend to treat. If the answer is only the ceiling, they are quoting one side of a room that is exposed on three.
