Soundproofing spray foam insulation in Beaumont is asked about more than it is in older towns, and the reason is architectural rather than acoustic: the houses here were designed open, and an open house has nowhere for sound to stop.

An open plan carries sound the way a divided house never did

A house from the middle of the last century is a set of small rooms with doors between them, and every one of those doors and walls is an obstacle. A Beaumont floor plan runs the kitchen, dining and living space together, frequently with a two-storey opening over part of it and a stair that is open to both levels. That is pleasant to live in and it means a conversation at one end is audible at the other, and that everything happening downstairs arrives in the bedrooms. Nothing has gone wrong. The building is doing what an open plan does.

Engineered floors are quicker to build and louder to live under

The floor systems in this stock are open-web trusses or I-joists rather than solid lumber, and they span further with less material. The consequence for sound is twofold: the cavity is deep and continuous rather than being broken into bays, so it carries noise laterally, and the assembly is lighter, so footsteps and impact transmit more readily than through a heavy old floor. The lateral path is the one people never guess. Sound entering the floor in one room can leave it two rooms away, which is why treating the ceiling directly under the noise sometimes achieves very little.

Find the path before deciding what to treat

The single most expensive mistake in this work is opening the wrong surface, and in this stock the path is frequently a service rather than a structure. A duct that serves two bedrooms is a direct air connection between them. A return air path above a door does the same. An open stair is a chimney for sound between floors. On most Beaumont houses at least one of those is doing more than any wall, and none of them are fixed by insulation. Establishing which is a single visit and it decides whether there is a job at all.

The cheapest version of this happens before the drywall goes on

This town is still building, and that is worth knowing because acoustic work is one of the few items that is dramatically cheaper during construction than afterwards. With the studs open there is no demolition, no making good, no dust through an occupied house, and the cavity can be treated on both sides of a wall rather than whichever side somebody is willing to open. It also settles the covering question by itself: foam in an occupied Beaumont room has to be covered by a thermal barrier, and during a build the drywall going on is that covering, so it costs nothing extra rather than being a separate line. Anybody with a house under construction here, or a basement about to be developed, should decide about sound now rather than three years into living with it. More on thermal barrier vs ignition barrier.

Soundproofing Spray Foam Insulation Beaumont: Common Questions

Why can we hear everything from the kitchen upstairs? That is an open plan and an open stair rather than a wall problem. The path has to be found first.

Will this stop footsteps? Only partly. Impact travels through the structure, and it is the hardest thing to treat.

Which foam is right? Open cell for sound. It is the opposite of the product used almost everywhere else here.
