A tank, a vessel or a length of pipe loses heat in proportion to how cold it is outside and how much bare surface it presents. Why foam suits vessels and skids
Tanks, separators and skid packages are not flat. They are curved, they carry nozzles, manways, brackets, supports and pipework, and every one of those is a place a blanket or a rigid board has to be cut, fitted and sealed. Sprayed closed cell follows the geometry continuously and bonds to the steel, which removes most of the joints. Joints are where heat leaves and where water gets in.
Coating is not optional out here
Foam degrades in ultraviolet light. On outdoor equipment it has to be coated - an elastomeric or equivalent protective topcoat - and that coating is part of the job rather than a finish somebody adds later. It also matters for corrosion under insulation: water that gets into an uncoated or damaged system sits against the steel where nobody can see it. An uncoated foam job on a tank is a job half done.
Remote sites change the logistics, not the specification
Access, power, weather windows and the site's own safety and permitting requirements shape when and how field work can happen. Application has temperature and humidity limits that a lease site in January will not always meet. Does foam replace heat trace? No. It makes trace effective. Insulation reduces the heat loss the trace has to make up; the two are specified together.
