Leduc is where Alberta's modern oil industry started in 1947, and the Nisku industrial park beside it remains one of the largest oilfield service and fabrication centres in the province. Spray foam insulation for oilfield tanks in Leduc is as often shop and yard work as field work, because so much of the equipment is built here before it goes anywhere.

Insulate it before it leaves the yard

A tank or skid package that is insulated and coated under controlled conditions, with proper access and no weather window to wait for, is a better job than the same scope executed on a remote lease in winter. If a package is being fabricated in Nisku, the insulation specification belongs in the build rather than in a callout six months later.

Vessel geometry and the joint problem

Separators, treaters, tanks and skids carry nozzles, manways, supports and pipe runs. Cut-and-fitted blanket or board forms a joint at every one of them, and joints are where heat leaves and water enters. Sprayed closed cell follows the geometry and bonds to the steel, so the system is close to continuous. That continuity is most of the real-world performance.

What the insulation is for

Slowing heat loss so freeze protection, heat trace and process heat can hold their operating window without running flat out. Insulation supplies no heat itself. Specifying it properly is what makes the heating side adequate rather than permanently behind.

Coating, and what happens without it

Foam degrades in ultraviolet light. Exterior applications are coated and the coating maintained, and that coating also keeps water off the steel underneath. Corrosion under insulation is the failure mode that shows up years later when the system is stripped, and detailing at terminations is where it is won or lost.

Retrofit or specify it into the build

There are two quite different jobs here. Insulating a package while it is being fabricated means full access, controlled conditions, no isolation to arrange and no weather to wait for. Retrofitting the same vessel in the field means access equipment, possible isolation, a weather window and working around whatever is around it. The specification may be identical; the execution and the cost are not. If the equipment does not exist yet, that decision is available cheaply, and it is worth taking deliberately rather than by default.

Spray Foam Insulation Oilfield Tanks Leduc: Common Questions

Do you work in the fabrication yards? Shop and yard work is a large part of this scope, and it is usually the better environment for a controlled application.

What if the vessel is already in service? Then access, isolation and site requirements set the terms, and the schedule usually follows a shutdown.

Is foam suitable for our operating temperature? There are product limits. Give us the operating temperature and the service and it becomes a straightforward specification question.
