Ceiling spray foam insulation in Sherwood Park is the job for the ceilings an attic crew cannot reach. Plenty of houses here have a straightforward attic over most of the plan and then one or two ceilings that are nothing of the kind, and those are reliably the surfaces the owner is calling about.

The low-slope addition with no space above it

Additions built onto these houses through the seventies and eighties were frequently roofed at a shallow pitch running off the existing wall, which leaves a cavity a few inches deep with no way in and no way to vent it properly. There is no attic to crawl through, no room for depth, and often no air barrier at all. It is the single most common cold ceiling in this suburb, and it cannot be fixed by anything done through the main attic hatch.

Split levels put ceilings where nobody looks

The split and four-level plans that were popular when this place was being built put a ceiling under a floor at a different level, under a landing, and above the short run of roof between two parts of the house. Each of those is an exterior surface behaving as a ceiling, and each was insulated, if at all, to whatever was convenient during construction. Finding them is part of the visit, because a plan drawing does not show which of them is exposed.

Depth is fixed, so performance per inch is the whole question

In a shallow assembly there is no option to add more, which changes the product decision. What matters is how much can be achieved in the space available and whether the assembly can be sealed at the same time, because a shallow cavity with air moving through it performs far below its nominal value. That is the case where a sprayed product earns its place rather than simply being an alternative to loose fill.

Vented or unvented has to be settled first

A shallow roof cavity can be built as a vented assembly, with a clear air path maintained above the insulation, or as an unvented one where the insulation is applied directly to the underside of the deck and the cavity becomes part of the interior. Both are legitimate. Doing half of each is not, and it is the most common way one of these Sherwood Park ceilings ends up with moisture in it. The decision gets made on site before anything is sprayed.

Ceiling Spray Foam Insulation Sherwood Park: Common Questions

Why is the family room ceiling cold with no attic above it? That is the low-slope addition, and it is the most common one here. It cannot be reached from the main attic.

Can we just add more insulation? There is no room to. The question becomes how much can be achieved in a shallow cavity and whether it can be sealed.

Should it be vented or not? One or the other, decided before anything is applied. Half of each is what causes the moisture problems.
